November 5, 200817 yr This came up in a conversation with a friend and honestly it seems far fetched and unrealistic at first glance but honestly think about it. If Obama brings sweeping social change and laws would it be completely impossible to see a bigger divide than the one we had going in to this election. How would the south tolerate unrestrictive abortions, unlimited and extra benefits to gay couples, unlimited affirmative action, and constant appeasement to the United Nations and Europe. I don't believe any of Obama's economic policies will divide this country but I wonder what his social policies will do to this country.
November 5, 200817 yr Author What "extra benefits" for homosexuals are you referring to? I honestly don't know myself, but maybe affirmative action type policies or policies where a gay marriage is treated better under the law than a straight marriage for example not penalized by more taxes as much.

Are you saying that Obama has said that he will give these types of things to homosexuals? Treat them better? Better tax breaks?
November 5, 200817 yr If any of you have facebook you can already see the division going on with people's status. I know that might be something for the younger generation, but it's crazy.
November 5, 200817 yr Author Are you saying that Obama has said that he will give these types of things to homosexuals? Treat them better? Better tax breaks? I haven't heard him say it I'm just speculating that if he becomes the most liberal President like he was the most liberal senator what might happen with the massive majorities he has in congress now.
November 5, 200817 yr I'm very anti abortion, but that has already devided those who care one way or the other. As for gays, I could care less. I seriously doubt my God has any issues with them. And I think all marrital benefits should be eliminated anyway, straight or gay. Why reward people just for getting married with tax breaks or whatever? I disagree when you say his economic beliefs won't devide the nation. Wealth re-distribution could very well do that. Even though I'm on the low end, and could very well benefit from his plan, I don't wan't any part of his Robin Hood plan of financing. I prefer to get by on my own. Until poor people start providing jobs, I'm against that plan. He also has expressed interest in changing the constitution (saying our forefathers got it wrong), but that was as a professor. Sometimes professors just think all kinds of crazy stuff to make themselves seem important. I hope/assume that's the case here. I think if he did that, we would be seriously divided.

November 5, 200817 yr It was closer than the electoral vote indicates.... I was joking. And CNN is reporting 51-48 Obama right now, I believe. That is with 76% reporting.

Actually, there are lots of poor people that have jobs. Also, the reason we have amendment to the constitution is because "our forefathers got it wrong" or did not see the unforeseeable.

November 5, 200817 yr I don't think we are that divided. It's not like this election was close . I don't either, but he isn't president yet. Also, he will get a free ride from major media, so even if he screws up, we'll never know about it. Honestly, I don't think he even attempts half the stuff he has talked about over the years, at until his second term. Some of that stuff is too radical for moderate Dems. And I think he gets a second term, as long as the economy is good. That's the way it always happens. Good economy = incumbents win.

Also, the reason we have amendment to the constitution is because "our forefathers got it wrong" or did not see the unforeseeable. I'm not sure why people assume poor people do not have jobs. They have jobs, they just don't have 'good' jobs.
November 5, 200817 yr The freakout from conservatives is funny and sad at the same time, because it was exactly how I felt in 2004. Get over it, suck it up.
