Are those people lazy, inept, or have zero motivation? I don't think so, I think they're hardworking and underpaid. But a lot of them are well past their teen years, and have a family to support. So the idea of "retraining" or going to college is out the window.

You can also "retrain" yourself by taking night classes or online classes. Learn a trade...whatever. Complaining about your lot in life and not doing anything about it gets you no where.

Night classes and online classes aren't always an option. College isn't always an option. Every circumstance is probably different. Just because you did it, doesn't mean everyone can do it.

Since you seem to know what they should do, why don't you lay out a plan for all of the poor people in the United States? You all make it sound so easy.

This isn't really about poor people, it's about people that don't try hard enough to get ahead. Work harder than the next guy to get ahead. It's really that simple. This IS the land of opportunity, just look at Obama.

I wouldn't go so far as to label them any of those things, necessarily (though there are too many that absolutely fall in those categories and then some). A lot of it does happen to be circumstancial, so the true wisdom would be to not get into those circumstances in the first place.

 

For example; a girl gets pregnant, can't afford college, has to work her behind off for years to make anything, never getting enough for college because they keep raising tuition. The mother tries to get loans, scholarships, etc, and finally succeeds in getting a minor scholly and goes to a community college. After one semester, she's run out of money and isn't able to return and has to go back to work.

 

A perfectly plausible scenario, I believe. Sometimes, no matter how hard someone works, bad luck will follow them.

 

However, if said girl never got pregnant in the first place, or maybe adopted (or, BGP forbid, aborted), then she could've hustled a few years and saved enough money.

 

It's hard to pass wisdom to the unwise.

And I hate when someone quotes my post and twists it into something I didn't say. Where did I put all poor people into the same category? Where did I say all of these people complain?

 

But for you too say there are no options for some is incorrect. College isn't the only option. If you will go back and read my post I said "learn a trade". Take classes to learn electronics, hydraulics, welding, auto mechanics, or any number of fields. I don't care how much you work and what you situation is you can always find a way to better yourself.

I've seen plenty of people make out of jut the type scenario you just laid out. It can be done, there are ways and people do it every day. Some just don't want to put that much effort in.

I realize it can happen, but too often drugs or something of that nature creeps into the picture, but I do agree that it can happen that way.

That unfortunately is the hard part for a lot of people. They aren't willing to give up drugs/alcohol because that's the lifestyle their friends are into and they know if they gave it up, their friends suddenly wouldn't be their friends anymore. It makes me sick. I see guys and girls I worked with/went to college with that are too scared to do what's best for themselves. I'd be more than happy to be there for them but they've got no spine or self-respect.

If it is against United States law, it is against United States law. It doesn't matter if God made anyone anyway, pedophilia is against the law and you are attempting to compare it to something that is not against the law.

Who's to say they can't change the law to say that an 8 year old is old enough to consent to sex? Write it down, it will happen in your lifetime.
