The poll writers for the journal need to be fired because how Is It that Doss beats John Hardin and North Bullitt and they don't even move up In the polls? They were already #9 To begin with? They droped from #2 To #5. The Kentucky prep poll writers need to be doing the Louisville Journal poll.

They must... Monroe beat Green at Green and yet Monroe is ranked 5th and Green is ranked 2nd. Go figure...

Henry County is ranked #4 in 3A, above all the other teams in their district, and lost to all of those teams. Good formula!!

Litkenhous is a very old poll developed many years ago and is still used nationwide by a number of publications...

 

In football, I find it - and the Cantrell ratings in the Herald-Leader - to be of very limited value, primarily because football teams play so few games.

 

Still, it has some value as a measure of relative strength of teams. You can bet, for example, that a team with a rating of 100 is a lot better than a team with a rating of 70 - and if you knew nothing else about the two teams, that would at least tell you something. (albeit not very much!)

 

The argument for ratings such as this, of course, is that they are totally unbiased. Human polls have an inherent bias in them that is hard to dispel...particularly in football. I see as much KY HS football as anyone, but it is difficult for me to compare the premier teams in my area (Oldham County in 5A, St. X in 6A, North Oldham and Henry County in 3A, North Bullitt in 4A, etc.) to their counterparts in other areas of the state (i.e., Johnson Central in 5A, Belfry in 3A, Bowling Green, etc., etc.) I read a lot about those teams, their games, and their stats, but I've never actually SEEN them...

 

Still, when Oldham County beats Scott County at Scott County...Doss beats John Hardin...Monroe beats Green...and all three victors are ranked below the teams they beat...yuck!

This is true, to an extent, but they aren't totally unbiased. Both these systems, use a "magic number" assigned to each team as a starting point. That magic number is subjective and assigned by human input.

Are you sure about that, Watusi? That may be true for Cantrell - I don't know much about Cantrell - but I'm fairly certain Litkenhous is 100% mathematical, without a "starting point". Note that Litkenhous does not come out until a few games into the season, when - ostensibly - the law of averages is beginning to come into effect and aberrations are - theoretically - being worked out...

I've never cared much for Lit since I was a Junior in High School. That year we (Boyle) went 9-1 but found ourselves with numbers below 4 of the teams we defeated that year and each of them had worse records than we. It wasn't like all 9 wins were vs. bad teams, particularly if 4 of those wins were against supposedly higher ranking teams. :confused:

Lets just say that it is unfathomable that Henry County (in technically about the closest thing to a Louisville district) is the #4 team in 3A. Typically the Lit Rating are geared HEAVILY towards Louisville area schools. Whereas Cantrall are geared more towards Lxington area schools.
