If Thompson from Boone County doesn’t win it is a joke. His team was picked to finish fourth in the district after losing a ton of talent and they dominate NKY 6 A again this year. Trosper had a good year but still lost to Boone and they are a 4-4 team at the best 6-4. Thompson is 7-1 and could be 9-1. Mueller has done a great job but everyone expected Highland to be very good this year.

Great point. If a program is expected to be very good every year, doesn't that say great things about the coach of that program? And when a program lives up to those expectations, is it fair to dismiss the coaching job done by that coach that year simply because he does it every year? I think not.

 

Furthermore, were the expectations that Highlands would be very good this year really realistic? They lost a ton of starters from a senior dominated team. On O, basically a new QB, 4 new starters on the O line. New wide receivers. Part time returning starter at TE. On D, only one returning starting Lber. Only one returning starter in the secondary. Two part time starters on the D line.

 

Add to the pretty severe lack of returning starters the fact that Conner missed the first 6 games completely and has only played sparingly in the last two games.

 

Add to the lack of returning starters and the absence of Conner the fact that Highlands starts 5 and sometimes 6 juniors both on O and on D.

 

And what has Highlands done this year with the lack of returning starters, the absence of Conner and all those starting juniors? Pretty much dominate every Ky school it has played this year and played a very competitive game against what is still considered to be one of the best big school teams in Ohio (and in my opinion one of the severaql favorites to win the big school championship over there). If anyone had told me we'd have the offensive production we've had (particularly at the beginning of the season with a green O line and without Conner), I've had told them they are nuts. But the coaching job that Mueller and his assistants have done this year is fantastic. Much, much better than last year when he had so many returning starters and seniors playing. Honestly, coaching the Birds last year was easy.

 

Don't get me wrong, Coach Thompson, Coach Trosper, Coach Rash and Coach Schneder and several others may be very deserving of it also. If Boone can make it to state, Coach Thompson will probably get it even if Highlands, Beechwood and NCC win state championships. If Boone doesn't make it to state however, Boone's success might (in the opinion of some) be more attributable not to great coaching by Rick, but rather to the erratic and (arguably) poor quality of 6A football in N. Ky. Having said that, I'm pulling for Rick and Boone to make it to state. I've known Rick a long, long time and he's a great guy.

 

These kind of selections are very, very difficult.

I agree that all of the above coaches should be congratulated on a job well done. They have all had great seasons. I just really think Rick Thompson and his staff have done a great job with the expectation of this year. If 6A is such poor quality then that doesn’t say much for Northern Kentucky Football because five of the top ten teams ranked in NKY football are 6A teams and one of those will not even make the playoffs. I don’t think that the competition is weak I just think that it’s very balanced between the schools which means that you better bring you’re A game every week because anyone can beat you in 6A.

You seem to be underestimating the fact that Trosper took a 1-9 team to a playoff team with a two seed. That alone is a pretty big accomplishment.

Is this just NKY coaches? If so we need to start one for the state. Only one post mentioned Billy Martin of North Oldham. I do not see HOW he would not be on the short list for this honor. Unbelievable job he has done there.

 

First of all they are undefeated. Secondly the kids are excited to play for him. Each year he gets kids to come back that had quit. He relates well with the kids and they seem to respect him.

As to the bolded part, I think football in N. Ky, other than Highlands, NCC and Beechwood (and possibly Boone which the playoffs will show is or is not strong) is pretty down this year. Once the playoffs begin, I guess we'll find out pretty quickly if 6A in N. Ky is good or not. I hope all the 6A teams do well and good luck to the Rebels.

I would like to recommend Coach Mike Davis for the Grant County Braves. Under his leadership, he has taken the Braves from losing seasons to winning seasons. Last year was Grant County's first ever winning season of 6-4. This year, the Braves will either be 6-4 or 7-3, all depending on Friday's game. I would also like to mention that the Braves are going to the playoff's this year. Coach Davis has turned the Braves around into a winning and respectable football team.:thumb:

The debate in this thread is passionate and pointed. There are several NKY coaches which are deserving of the recognition. There is little argument against the success of Coach Mueller and the great Highlands program, as well for Coach Rash and another terrific year for Beechwood. Who could deny the monumetal turn around and great season for Coach Trosper and Conner? We all want to tip our hats to the sentimantal picks of Coach McMillen at Walton Verona and Coach Borchers at Cooper for beginning from scratch. I personally am proud of Coach Rick Thompson at Boone. He lost 30 seniors and nearly every skilled position player (including a 2900+ yard rushing tailback) and proceded to go out and repeat as district champs. I thought that they would be scappy but in no way expected the season that Boone's enjoyed. So who's the winner? It's simple, we the fans! We are so blessed to live in an area with so many good teams where week in and week out we get to witness the efforts and abilities of kids who have given months of sacrifice, discipline, sweat, and inner fortitude to lay it all on the line for the hope of victory. Regardless of which deserving Coach is selected, the players who have matured under their tutorledge and the fans are the real winners!

I have played for coach Brossart, and IMO his name matches up no where near any of these other coaches. He wins his games because of talent, he really has never done very much teaching...

I would have to give my vote to the McMillen from Walton. He has taken a first year program and has actually made them competitive with other small schools and winning several games this year. A very impressive feat!

 

Who cares about Mueller!.....with the exception of Ryan Ernst

I change my vote! Dale Mueller should be exempted from this award. It's a given year in and year out he would win it.

 

MY VOTE goes to Coach Brossart of CovCath. For no other reason than tolerating the "situation" being dissed in another thread. I saw a hoops coach at HHS go through a similar situation some 30 years ago. It absolutely wore him, his family, and the team out. My prayers for strength are with you and your family Sir!
