A Russell fan made the "little brother" analogy for last year’s game with Raceland – however, they had Raceland as the little brother. I think the point that Painter is making is that: the roles are reversed this year. Raceland can probably name the score.

TCA posted this in the Ashalnd/Johnson Central thread. I'm not going to get into a debate about who would win if we (Ashland/Raceland) played again today, because it's not going to happen - and we will never know. So, the discussion is pointless.

 

It will be interesting to see if Raceland can beat Russell worse than Ashland did. This is not an accurate way to measure the three teams today, but it will be interesting.

I don't think bulletin board material is really needed for Raceland in this one. This year's Russell team is a world away from being as good as last year's team and is a galaxy away from being as good as the '05 and '06 teams. Let's face it. The stars are aligned for the Rams in this one. This game pits the best Raceland team in a decade against the worst Russell team in a decade. No bulletin board material is needed when you simply have the better team.

 

And darn it, I really wanted to come on here and give you Raceland guys a hard time about how Russell is going to win this week! But after witnessing this Russell team play again tonight, I have to say they are going need a turnaround for the ages to beat Raceland. And since I don't think they are allowed to bring back Tyler Jones, Adam Foster, Toby Hicks, Jonathan Cornwell, and Greg Bender from last year's team, the facts are the facts. Raceland should beat this team and beat them badly.

 

That being said, I voted for Russell in the poll just to make sure they had one vote. ;-)

 

 

 

I'm pretty sure Kasey Clark and Josh Wills have used up all their eligibility as well. I enjoy reading your post, RP. You speak from your brain and not your heart and I like that. I'm going to have to agree with you and go with the Rams on this one as well. Until this Russell team shows me some heart or some character or even some emotion, I won't have much faith in them. I wouldn't be too surprised if Raceland really thumps them Friday night.

Raceland didn't have the horses to keep with Russell last season. Russell had a much better line in 2007 than they do this season and Raceland has a better line THIS season then they did last season. Raceland won't wear down this year. I can guarantee you that.

 

I've only got to see Russell once this year against Ashland. They just seemed to lack a leader on the field and they got pushed around up front. If they want to beat the Rams they will have to play much better in the trenches. That's where games are won and lost.

 

I know we can say the evidence points to a Raceland win, especially after this past Friday. But rivalries have a funny way of going the other way sometimes. Raceland can't take Russell for granted. They need to remember last season and take care of business.

I said it in a earlier thread and I'll say it again. No one IMO can stop the Rams from having a perfect season ...except the RAms.

 

WOW!! That is a bold statement. I know Beechwood as a pretty good team this year. Many up in Beechwood are talking about this maybe the best Beechwood team EVER!! That's saying something too. I'm not saying that Raceland will not win it all this year because I think they CAN and I hope they do win it all. But, I also think that Beechwood CAN beat Raceland and they CAN stop the Rams. Will they? Who knows. Will someone else stop them before they get there? It's quite possible. I really hope not but it's possible. My point is that there are many good teams out there that CAN stop the Rams. Raceland is very good but they ae not so good that nobody can touch them. It takes alot of things to fall your way in order to win a state title. You have to be good and LUCKY to just get there, much less win it all. Trust me, I know. I've seen it up close and personel. I hope they run the table though, that would be awesome!!

You beat me to it on that one! Beechwood was the first thing that popped in my mind as well. These Raceland fans are one confident bunch this year! Both the Ashland and LCA games could have gone either way. I hope Raceland does well in the playoffs, but to suggest they can only lose if they make an inordinate amount of mistakes and "beat themselves" is over the top...especially when they will probably be double digit underdogs against Beechwood.

 

Anyhow, back to the thread about the Raceland-Russell game. :-)

Look, you have to admit, whenever the fans and community are behind you and cheer the team on, the team seems to want to win or at least try. Don't get me wrong I know Russell is down to comparable standards of just the last 3 to 4 years. I know I am a little spoiled. I just want to show some encouragment to these young men and the coaching staff...

 

I understand, and appreciate your words of encouragement. Given the choice, I much prefer staying optimistic and seeking that “silver lining” too.

 

There is just something missing from this group of Red Devils and I’m not close enough to the program to have a clue as to what that may be…perhaps it’s nothing at all other than the inevitable ebb and flow of talent which every program experiences. Russell has conditioned this whole community over the past few years to expect great accomplishments from them on the gridiron.

The biggest problem i have seen with the Devil's is,when they have something go wrong they seem to let it snowball and keep self destructing. They dont seem to be able to pick it up and put it behind them,thats where they need some leadership to step up on the field.

I think it is just that us Russell fans have gotten accustomed to seeing great efforts from all 11 guys on the field for a full 48 minutes every Friday night and there have been a few games this season where it appeared the effort lapsed. I really don't think it is the losses to Ashland, Simon Kenton, and Mason County that has gotten many of us so disgruntled. It is the fact that it appeared the team quit in a couple of those games. Heck, they even took a knee with a minute left against Ashland to put a stop to the beating! That is just not what you expect from a Russell team. You expect them to compete hard from kickoff to close. If a team "smacks them in the mouth", then you expect them to respond like warriors willing to fight all night rather than look like they would just as soon get the game over with.

 

If they leave it all on the field this Friday against Raceland, then I am pretty sure most Russell fans will leave the stadium happy win or lose. It's the pride and effort that I want to see more than the results.

What I want to know is: can the Rams beat Russell by more than Ashland did?

Rams should take this one by 14 or more. Russell's D just isn't there. Offensively they don't have Bailey, who is their biggest play maker and really hurt the Rams last year. Although Russell has played 2 very good teams the last 2 weeks while Raceland has played cupcakes.

Russell is coming off a loss where they won every statistical category but loss on the scoreboard where it counts. I still can't believe they passed more in that game, then they had all season. Especially averaging 7 yards a carry.

 

Talent wise, Russell has some very talented players. Miller, Dillon, Bailey and Abrams all stick out to me. However, there is a dropoff after those guys that the recent teams for Russell didn't have.

 

 

I hear alot of comments about the Ashland-Russell game. Conditioning is a factor for Russell. Proof of that is 6-3 @ halftime with Ashland, with Russell then fumbling the kickoff and the tomcats capitolizing, then you just saw all the energy drain from them. Ashland is the better team and took the game late. If Raceland can come out and suck the enrgy out of Henry R. Evans stadium and the Russell players they should win. Russell and their offense under McGlone is not the type of team that can make comebacks. Actually traditionally they are like UK in that they always allow for great comebacks against them.
