October 21, 200818 yr You conspiracy theorists crack me up. That official was getting the heck out of the way of pressure that he felt from his backside--whether real or imagined, his instincts told him that he was about to get blasted from behind and he reacted accordingly. It didn't look good on film, but the self-preservation instinct was very real, I assure you. If you've ever stood behind a linebacker in the middle of a big-time football game, you'd understand. The bigger question is, which scenario is worse for a running back: getting tackled by a kicker, or getting blown up by an arm tackle from an AARP member who isn't even wearing a helmet?
October 21, 200818 yr Looked intentional to me. :thumb: Me too, I kind of figured he had money on the over/under.

Then please tell me why he shuffled his feet towards the QB and then threw his shoulder into him. If he was simply trying to get out of the way he wouldn't have exerted any force to the SC player and he too would have been knocked down, he didn't budge. Intentional.

There is no doubt that the official intentionally delivered the blow into the runner. But, what would YOU do if YOU were that official? Would YOU voluntarily get run over, or would YOU smack anybody between YOU and a safe outcome? I understand why you asked the question. Please understand my counter-argument.

I would have stayed still or moved to the left. Either way that would have never happened if he hadn't taken multiple steps in the direction that the play was developing.

Yeah every time Im about to get blasted from behind I forearm or shoulder block the first person I can slide to
October 21, 200818 yr Looked intentional to me. The forearm was uncalled for. He should be suspended. I've not reffed college, but have reffed alot of football and have never seen that done. Most umpires drop back they don't pursue the play. He stepped into the player to deliver the blow.
October 21, 200818 yr Are there any other angles of the play to watch? Does it look as obvious from different views?
October 21, 200818 yr Are there any other angles of the play to watch? Does it look as obvious from different views? Yes, youtube has one clip that has several angles. It's obvious that the official, and former UK grad is still upset that Garcia led the Gamecocks to a victory over UK last weekend.

You apparently aren't a ref then. Because if it comes down to it then you better get knocked over because refs aren't supposed to tackle players if they feel like they want too in order to avoid from getting hit like you are saying. You can back him as much as you want but you already agreed that he lowered his shoulder into the player which is half of what made the play intentional to begin with.
October 21, 200818 yr Steve Spurrier says the official did nothing wrong. He was trying to get out of the way," Spurrier said of Hackett, according to The State in Columbia, S.C. "Stephen sort of cut back right into him. Sometimes that will happen... http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3654428
October 21, 200818 yr I can't believe Spurrier isn't upset. The ump should've never been in that position he should've been backing away from the play.

October 21, 200818 yr Wilbur was a classmate and friend of mine at UK. We played a whole lot of basketball together in the off season but I must say he was way wrong to extend himself and make contact with the QB. I don't think he ever weighed more than 185 and was a starting LB in the SEC. He hit as hard as anyone I have ever seen. Had the heart of a lion.
