It's already been discussed in another thread. I don't recall Liddy blowing up any federal buildings but I do remember that Liddy paid his debt to society by serving a substantial prison sentence. I do not believe that Mr. Liddy would knowingly associate with known terrorists like Ayers and Dohrn.

Ellsberg had leaked the Pentagon Papers to the New York Times.

 

BTW, his 20 years sentence was commuted to 5 1/2 years by none other than Jimmy Carter.

There is much focus on McCain's attempt to tie Obama to Bill Ayers, but that the former Weatherman is a mere means to an end.

 

Such was made plain with the new McCain ad this morning suggesting Obama cares little for US troops and has actually endangered them.

 

It's this line, used over the weekend and again today, that captures the message Republicans are trying to drive: "This is not a man who sees America as you and I do -- as the greatest force for good in the world."

 

At best, this is to say that Obama doesn't believe in American exceptionalism. At worst, and this is where the new ad goes, it means Obama doesn't sufficiently love America and is actually apart from it.

 

At first, I suppose, I didn't want to agree with Jonathan Martin. Unfortunately, I think he's right.

 

Prior to Palin's delivering of the attack, the campaigner warming up the crowed referred to Obama by his middle name, the first time, to my knowledge, any campaign has chosen to go there. Today at a rally McCain was asking the audience, rhetorically, "who is the real Barack Obama?" The most audible voice in the crowd shouted "terrorist!" Is it really Bill Ayers, or does Obama secretly cheer for the Islamic fundamentalists? It's pretty clear the Wright stuff didn't stick, and the Ayers stuff isn't going to either. Why would it this time? It might be a little deeper than placing Obama on some non-profit education board with a bad character.

 

I might be wrong. And I hope I am. McCain has always seemed well above this kind of stuff through the years and is why I've supported him. But, when Sarah Palin drags the campaign down this path, trailing by statistically significant numbers with the election only a few weeks a way, this sort of observation is demanded.

 

 

I just think we're seeing the depths McCain will sink to to win the Presidency. I used to have a lot more respect for John McCain, and would have seriously considered voting for him if he hadn't sold out on so many of his principles (reversing his opposition to Bush's irresponsible tax cuts, pandering to hardcore evangelicals, and invalidating his "Country First" mantra by selecting the unqualified Sarah Palin). He's no longer "the Maverick", that's for sure.

The bottom line is that Liddy is not a terrorist and he was punished for his part in the Watergate burglary. The parallels between whatever friendship there is between Liddy and McCain and Obama's ties to the terrorist couple Ayers and Dohrn are weak at best. To my knowledge, McCain has not lied about his relationship with Liddy. Am I wrong?

Palin also told those gathered that Obama doesn't like American soldiers. So, what does this opinion piece have to do with the thread? Do you see the fact that a couple of unruly people managed to find their way into a large Palin rally as the equivalent of a decade along association with unrepentant terrorists? What is the connection here?

The Real Obama

Critics of Senator Barack Obama make a strategic mistake when they talk about his "past associations." That just gives his many defenders in the media an opportunity to counter-attack against "guilt by association."

 

We all have associations, whether at the office, in our neighborhood or in various recreational activities. Most of us neither know nor care what our associates believe or say about politics.

 

Associations are very different from alliances. Allies are not just people who happen to be where you are or who happen to be doing the same things you do. You choose allies deliberately for a reason. The kind of allies you choose says something about you.

 

Jeremiah Wright, Father Michael Pfleger, William Ayers and Antoin Rezko are not just people who happened to be at the same place at the same time as Barack Obama. They are people with whom he chose to ally himself for years, and with some of whom some serious money changed hands.

 

Some gave political support, and some gave financial support, to Obama's election campaigns, and Obama in turn contributed either his own money or the taxpayers' money to some of them. That is a familiar political alliance-- but an alliance is not just an "association" from being at the same place at the same time.

 

Obama could have allied himself with all sorts of other people. But, time and again, he allied himself with people who openly expressed their hatred of America. No amount of flags on his campaign platforms this election year can change that.
