Could someone inform me on what the "Paddle" is. Sorry I'm ignorant to this tradition- sounds like a good tradition- someone fill me in.

 

The "Paddle" is a new travelling trophy that was presented to both schools last year by a Bellevue Assistant. It is a wooden boat paddle that has one side painted Gold for Bellevue and the other side Green for Dayton. The winning team will then add the score and year on it. The Paddle represents both schools being "River Cities".

The concept really took off as Dayton incorporated the theme into their homecoming game last year.

Dayton won last years game and thus won the 1st "Battle for the Paddle".

Bellevue BIG!!!!

The meanest rivarly in the state coming this Friday. Bellevue is senior dominated, while Dayton is junior dominated. Before last weeks game against Lloyd, I thought the speed of Bellevue would give Dayton a lot of trouble, but Dayton was able to run with Lloyd most of the game. And I would dare to say Lloyd has better team speed than Bellevue does. This game will not be a blow out by any means, this will be a close 4th quater game. The keys for Bellevue to win is win the line of scrimage and be able to run between the tackles on Dayton. Dayton will be able to handle the outside runs and the passing game of the tigers. For Dayton to win they have to establish the run early and make Bellevue put eight men in the box, where Sherlock can then go to work on the out routes and fly routes. I have watched Dayton grow as a team since the start of the season, and they have came together at the perfect time. Not only are they starting to play as a single unit, but now they have the added bonus of going to Bellevue on their homecoming night. It is going to be a fun, hard hitting game with both teams laying it all on the line. If Dayton can stop the inside the run they win in a close one.

As always this will be a hard fought game. Both teams will come out pumped up and ready to play, let's just hope there aren't any crazy penalties in this game. I just the combo of Buckler and Barrett, along with Wills and Hegge will be too much for Dayton's Defense to handle.

Technically, Dayton won the first "Battle for the Paddle" game last season, so its never been at Bellevue, but thats irrelevant.

 

Big game for both schools, as it usually is. Although Dayton has struggled thus far, they will come into Bellevue with hopes to spoil Bellevue's Homecoming (Bellevue hasn't won their Homecoming game in 4 years I think?) I think this one will be close until the fourth quarter, where Bellevue starts opening it up a bit.

You must not know a lot about Bellevue as you think you do. Bellevue blew Brossart out of the water for last year's homecoming win, and won two years before that... It will be close the first half, and if so whoever wins the first 5 minutes of the second half takes the paddle. :fire:

If this is their homecoming game then kudos for Bellevue for scheduling their biggest rivalry on their biggest night of the year during the regular season. Jam packed house fo sho.

 

Dayton did the same last year and nearly sold out old Davis Field. I wouldn't be surprised for it to become the norm for the home team to make this game the homecoming game for years to come now that they aren't playing the last game of the season.

The paddle is just a new thing the schools did that really gives an object to display the yearly bragging rights. The rivalry is much older and deeper than just the paddle. This is the most played rivalry and second oldest rivalry in the state. Bad blood runs deep in the veins of this one.

 

As for actual game strategy, to me it seems pretty simple that the team that can stop the opposing offense's strength has the upper hand. Bellevue has a strong run game, so Dayton will need to dig in on the defensive front to keep Buckler and friends bottled up. Dayton is at their best in the vertical passing game as long as they can keep Sherlock clean, so Bellevue needs to get a good pass rush and maybe drop an extra DB every now and then.

 

Looking at the season up to this point, Bellevue seems to have the more talented team. But you don't have to look farther than the first round of last years playoffs to see that the team that is proabably more talented doesn't always win in this rivalry...

 

I think the best I have heard this rivalry summed up was in the article before last years game by one of the players, who said something like:

 

"We don't like them, they don't like us, no one really knows why, that's just how it is."

He was a member of that fine senior class from last in which I believe just about all of them made pretty big contributions for not only the entire season, but also in a great playoff win to send Dayton home early, and a great turn-a-round season for Dave Eckstein.. As a whole, outside of Beechwood, the district isn't as strong as it was last season. Bellevue, Dayton, and Ludlow I believe all lost big senior classes.

Dayton lost the biggest in 16 or 17 seniors. I'm not exactly sure how many Ludlow lost, but they were still able to return some starters from last year, and the same goes for Bellevue. They did lose their big offensive line from last year, but they returned the heart of their team in Buckler and Barrett.

 

And that quote is perfect, I remember reading it in the paper and just remarking of how perfect it really is for this game. It seems like from when you are a starter in the NKYFL you learn to dislike the other team. Outside of sports we could be friends and talk to each other, but once those uniforms were put on or the mear mention of who is better in a certain sport it brings bad blood. I would have to say there isn't a rivarly like this one in the state, one that goes as deep as this one does. Both teams will come out firing on all cylinders. Both will be pumped beyond thier wildest dreams, it all comes down to who can execute for the entire game. Should be fun :fire:

We agree on a couple of things. This is one of the meanest rivalry in state. Dayton is better than most think. Thats where we stop seeing eye to eye.

Sorry to tell you but that was Bellevue's JV vs Brackens varsity. Second I was down at Bellevue's practice this evening and even though it's Monday they are looking good. No doubt it will be a good game, but I don't think that Dayton can match up well with Bellevue. The combo of Buckler and Barrett will be too much for Dayton to handle in the long run. Bellevue will win that Paddle and keep it where it was born. Good luck Tigers and remember not to get a big head going into this game just because Dayton is 0-6. With this rivalry records mean nothing at all. Cant wait to sing that song with you guys.
