a real defensive struggle, both teams speed cancelled each other out and it just came down to the big plays.

 

Central had the ball inside the redzone for 1st and 10 with 2 min. To go.

This game also had some of the best talent has to offer on defense.

Central scored it's only TD after a Western fumble inside it's own 20 on the 1st play from scrimmage.

 

Down 8-6, Western scored on a long pass on the 1st play of the 4th quarter.

 

Central drove from it's own 20 inside the Western 10 late in the game, but Western held on 4th and 3 from the 8 with less than a minute remaining.

How good is Western? I haven't heard much about them?

Flying "under the radar", mostly because their coaching staff only took over in late May, so they had no off-season/spring practice. Very fast, some size too. Starters are mostly Juniors and Sophomores. Defense tough, offense still "finding it's way".

I guess I am looking for more insight. Does this game indicate that Central may not be as strong as many had thought? Do they struggle moving the football? Or should we take from this game that Western has a very good football team?

I talked to a knowledgable Highlands fan at the Highlands-Hopkinsville game on Saturday that stopped to watch the Central-Western game on Friday night. Highlands plays Central in a few weeks.

 

His assessment: Central has a lot of work to do offensively. Remember that they lost a lot of their skill-position guys on offense.

 

This is still the same Central team that pushed Manual to the final minutes ... they are still a legitimate state championship contender.
