Dow Jones largest drop ever

Featured Replies

I thought it was a little short of the biggest drop ever?

Falling just short of the drop following September 11. At least that is what I read, a few minutes before the markets closed for the day.

As long as nobody panics, things will rebound...at some point. The worst thing that could happen (and what probably will happen) is that everyone will panic and pull their $$$.

Your right. I think on 911 people had to many other things on their mind to even think about it. Relax, if your young enough, things will be fine. As for the older generation and retirement, don't rush to a snap decision. Think everything thru carefully and make sure you get as much info. as possible.

This is actually the largest single day drop ever. On a side note, Wachovia Bank is the one that failed today. My grandson's father works for them.

Umm ... Wachovia didn't fail .... it was bought by Citi.

Now .. they may have been in danger of failing ... but they didn't.

They are in a much better spot now--which also speaks to Citi's strength.

Your grandson's father should be in good shape with Citi.

October 1987 there was a drop about 3 times as large as yesterday's. About 22% vs 7. Need to keep things in perspective. If you have cash available there are some opportunities out there.

Wouldn't it be better to wait until the market hits rock bottom before you invest? Or has it?

This was the single biggest drop in points at 777 but not even close by percentage.

How's it faring today?

I think I saw like up ~2.6%

I don't think anyone ever can know that. I certainly don't but I sure wish I did. I have a list of stocks I've researched and follow religiously. When they reach a price I feel is a value I go ahead and invest, assuming nothing has changed in their long term outlook. Many very good stocks have tumbled due to the market but their individual circumstances have not changed.

Dow is up based on all the talk about how they are rushing to continue with the Bailout. When they vote it down again just wait. Doomsday !!!
