I once had a kid selling restaurant cards outside Wal Mart for $20.00. The card was legitimate, but I know our school sold them for $10.00. I called him on it and he walked away.

 

I also was approached by a desperate woman at a gas station. She just left a sick relative at Children's Hospital and left her purse there. She didnt have enough gas to get home. I did give her $5.00 for gas, but still feel like a fool for doing that.

The worst thing that got me was a man approached me in a parking lot. He told me a story about how he needed a few dollars for gas and could I please help him out. I asked him if he was hungry and he said yes. I gave him $10 and told him to get him some food and some gas (this was about 3 years ago). About an hour later I saw him walking down the street scratching off some lottery tickets! I was furious and felt like a fool. However, my kids were with me and saw the whole thing and I used it as a teaching tool. I told them that even though I was "taken" that time, what if it had been Jesus and I refused to help? (I had to remind myself of that because my blood was boiling.) Regardless I went to bed with a clear conscience and knew my heart was in the right place.

 

My husband has the right idea for helping people that come up to him. I've seen him several times be approached on the street by people who are "hungry." He always takes them to a fast food restaurant and buys them whatever they want to eat. That way he knows the money is being used for food. Once, though, the guy refused to go with him! That told us all we needed to know about that guy!

Same thing happend to my brother when he lived in Dallas. He was going in to a Quiznos and I guy asked him for some money for food. He explained to him that he was going in for a sub and would get a foot long and give him half of it. The guy argued with my brother because he wanted the money not the food. I have not given money to anything or anyone unless I know it is legit since then (well, not until Sunday night).

This isn't anything new, it's an old trick in the scam artists book. This exact same thing happened to me in 2003 or 2004. You'll never receive a book/magazine and you'll never get your money back. Chaulk it up as a lesson learned and be glad that you paid cash, at least they wont be able to auto withdrawal from your checking acct.

 

The GOOD News - You know someone on Bluegrass Preps that fell victim to this same scam, so now you're armed with that knowledge and the ability to catch this disaster before it gets out of hand. Good luck. I feel sorry for you, because its going to be a bit of a headache.

I would stay on top of my account for a month or two just to make sure. Also, did he give you a copy of what you signed? You might want to read that over very closely.

There was not much to what he gave me. It was basically just a receipt. On the back it had the cancellation policy guidelines.

That's what I was given, as well - although they told me over and over that I knew exactly what I was signing.

Two ladies came to our home last night...late (9pm). They were selling a cleaner that would clean the car, house, tables, floors, etc. They called it an all in one cleaner. I told them that my husband just got out of the hospital and I did not have time to talk. They said that this is what the hospitals use...LOL...WHATEVER! I slammed the door in thier face. GRRRR

Had a guy last fall come up my driveway ( I live on top of a mountain) wanting to sell me steaks from some company. I said "Son, we are vegetarians, and live off of what we are able to grow up here". The boy looked at me and never said a word and slowly backed the truck off the hill. I suppose he hadn't heard that one before.

In Lexington you can get some sweet deals for gift cards from homeless people. They usually sell ya a $50 gift cards for about 10 bucks so they can either buy lottery tickets or alcohol.

I had something similar happen to me about 2 months ago.

 

Now, I live in an apartment complex and luckily we have peepholes. Someone knocked on the door, so I got up to answer. I look through the peephole and was prepared to just ignore it. I saw a relatively attractive young lady at the door, so I figured I would answer.

 

My first hint should have been that this was at almost 9 PM at night.

 

As soon as I opened the door she went into her spiel about how she was a college basketball player (from some college I had never heard of) and that she was doing a fundraiser so that her team could go to Europe and play in some tournament. She said that if she met her quota, the team would get to go and I could help her buy subscribing to a magazine or two.

 

I was politely going along with it, so I looked at the list of magazines, but to be honest, none of them interested me. I really don't need a 3 year subscription to Cosmo.

 

I had to tell her no about 3 times but she finally thanked me and left. It wasn't a big deal, no real time lost from my day.

 

I used to work in downtown Richmond and we got solicitors probably once every two weeks. They were trying to pawn everything from keychain-sized digital cameras-to giant coloring books-to jewelry supposedly made by disadvantaged Kenyans.

"Can I blacktop your driveway?" "Can I mow your yard?" "Can I rake you leaves?" The list goes on and on. The sad thing about it is the stuff that they list does not need to be done, or, I just did it. I will point that out to them and I just get a really stupid look! It makes me sick.

Well I would be careful if I were you. A few years back we were in the process of moving into a new house. I was at our old house packing up things from one of the rooms and moving them down into the garage for easier access when the moving truck came. That way everything would be ready to go in the garage and everything that was inside the house would be packed up and moved out.

 

Because of the regular trips back and forth, I had the garage door wide open (which just happened to be housing my dirt bike). I hear the doorbell ring and go downstairs to see who was at the door. There were two men, both in their mid-30's, that looked like they had been mowing yards. They asked if I would like for them to mow/weed-eat the hill behind our house (it was getting tall because we were moving and hadn't bothered to mow). I told them no thanks, and they said thanks anyways and appeared to leave. I went back upstairs to continue packing.

 

About 5 minutes later I just happen to look out the window and see one of the guys in a black truck driving very slowly down the driveway. I watched suspiciously and then I saw the other guy.....

 

He had put my dirt bike into neutral and was rolling it down the hill and met him at the bottom and started to load it into the back of the truck.

 

I immediately grabbed a phone to call the police and ran outside but they were already driving off. I called the police and told them what they were driving, what they looked like, etc. This town wasn't big, so it shouldn't have been hard to spot them, but the police said "we'll try to find them, and we'll be sending someone to the house to file a police report."

 

So I waited for 30 minutes until the cops showed up. They filed a report and I gave descriptions of both of the men and the truck they were driving.

 

About a week later I got a call from the police saying that I needed to come down to the station. When I got there they asked me to identify the bike, which I did. They had scratched off the serial numbers and taken off most of the stickers I had on it, but I managed to clean off some dirt and found a sticker I had put there.

 

I got the dirt bike back after verifying that it was mine but I don't know what happened to the two guys.

 

The police said that they were eating at KFC earlier that day and two guys that fit the description (and their truck fit my description) came in to order something. He said they followed the men back to a house and pulled them over and started questioning them about the bike. They said that "someone" had given them the bike but that they didn't know it was stolen :sssh:

 

Sometimes I wonder what happened to the guys....
