September 15, 200818 yr Or at least I feel like I did. Stupid part is, I knew it all along but could not help myself. Thing is, I always tell these people no. Guy comes by at 8:30 last night (hint #1). Anyways, his story was that he was selling magazine subscriptions or children's books for hospitals. If he collected so many points, he would be eligible for an internship with the BBC. Being an anglophile and overall proponent of internationalization, I caved in to the lad. We have too many magazines so I opted for the children's books. Only $1 a month. Of course you have to do three years worth so we are at $36. I huffed when I heard the total but said fine, let me grab my checkbook. I could not locate my checkbook, and for the only time in my life, I have some extra cash laying around the house. I come back and tell him I have to go with cash, which for him is good because you get "extra points" for cash. He also received "extra points" for me falling under the category of a community leader and my degree. I hand him $40 and he writes out my receipt. "Thank you so much, sir. High five!" He puts up his hand. I respond, "Not until I get my $4 in change." "Well if you look there is a $12 processing fee for a total of $48, but I was going to cover it since you put up the $40 in cash." "Bit misleading, don't you think?" He then apologizes and offers me back the $40. I just shut the door in his face... I sure got the best of him I expect to see him out this week buying a round of shots for the house.
September 15, 200818 yr Sounds as if your instincts were all saying NO NO NO, what made you say yes? I dont even answer my door unless I recognize who it is anymore.

September 15, 200818 yr Author Hint #2 should have been the white, unmarked 15 passenger van honking for this guy to hurry up.

The slim chance of a hope kids these kids get the books and this guy gets to go to Britain, because of me. If the kids get the books, I have no problem with what I did. I guess knowing that the world works on a "glass half empty" approach, I have my serious doubts.
September 15, 200818 yr I got this a couple of years ago. I too usually just cut them off with a not interested and shut the door. This kid got me in a good mood guess. His story was he was selling subscriptions for a chance to win a trip. I looked at his list and thougth what the heck. I bought a two year subscription for Maxim for $36, a good deal right? The first issue came and it was Field and Stream. I called the number on my receipt and the person told me they would fix it and for my trouble continue the Field and Steam at no charge. I received 3 issues of Maxim and never saw another one. I did get the Field and Stream for the year.

I think I have had that person come to my door, he told me if he sold so many books/magazines that he would get to go to London for some type of internship. I turned him down though. I never buy anything from people at my door unless I see that it is a true fundraiser from a local school and I can see the logo. Plus the prices are usually less, like the $1.00 candy bar for football that my neighbor was selling.
September 15, 200818 yr I was offered the same pitch as woodsrider that sounds a lot like the pitch offered to bugatti. Guy was selling subscriptions to earn points that would let him win a trip to Mexico. This guy caught me between my car and apartment. Unfortunately for this person, he wouldn't take a simple, polite "no thanks, man" for an answer. So I did what any reasonable person would do and signed up for as many magazine subscriptions as would fit on his form. Double points for the expensive ones. Time to pay up, but ah, but I don't carry cash or a checkbook. Triple points if I go to the ATM for him, says the guy. OK. "Let me just take a quick nap first, why don't you stop by again in an hour or so?" I opened the door. Or not.

Yes, you and I got solicited by the same "scam" on the same day at our apartment by different people. GET A REAL JOB PEOPLE!
September 15, 200818 yr Well I'm quitting my job and moving to where you all live to sell "magazine subscriptions".

September 15, 200818 yr Some kid came by my house a few weeks ago selling something for some kind of fund raiser. My mom didn't want any of it but gave the kid $20 anyways for his cause. Watching that irritated me and I angrily explained to her that there was no way that money was going anywhere near any charity or fund raiser, just straight to that kids pocket.:irked:
September 15, 200818 yr I had two men, college age knock at my door the other day as well. They said I was selected for a Free Carpet Cleaning. I had just bought this house and installd bamboo hardwood throughout and told them I didn't have carpet. They then kept on saying we clean hardwood too. However, I was onto their game by then when I saw they were carrying around a .5 cent notebook that had been chewed up by a dog and had mutilated pages. I told them it takes special products to clean bamboo wood and it is true and told them to get on their way. They then said if I let them in to clean they just had to have 15 more clients in able to go to England on a sponsored trip. The best part is that they walked off, they didn't even have a car. Where was their equipment, etc. It is untelling what they would've donw if I had let them in. Just a bunch of THUGS.
