Two tragic events I will always remember. I was in the 2nd grade when JFK was assasinated and still remember like it just happened. We all bowed our heads and prayed for him, something that wouldn't be allowed to happen today. 9-11 I was picking up a school bus in Lexington that just happened to have a radio in it, and they came on with the news. I was making a turn on to 421 that's how stuck in my mind it is.

 

Pigman, you would certainly be allowed to pray in school. The teacher just couldn't make it compulsary. I was a teacher than day. I had several students pray. I silently prayed myself. Whenever I heard that Alan Jackson song, the line about the teacher really strikes me.

 

A student that was an office aide came to my room very soon after the first plane struck. I turned on the TV and began watching it with my class. We saw the 2nd plane hit. That student still says to this day that my reaction to the event really touched him. He said that was part of the reason he went into the military. He has since been stationed in Afghanistan. He says that he wishes we would put more emphasis on that warfront, as opposed to the emphasis on Iraq.

 

We watched TV the rest of the day. Class changes would occur and the students just walked in near silence to their next class, and would begin watching the coverage again.

 

I remember later that afternoon, too, being on the football field...and looking up and seeing a plane flying over. All action just kind of stopped and we watched together. This was about 4 pm, so I assume that it was Air Force One...or the plane with the Saudi Royal family.

I was in 6th Grade History when this tragic event happened. I'll remember this for the rest of my life.

I remember I was sitting in 7th grade English when the first attack happened. However, we went uninformed for the duration of the class. Then walking down a silent hallway (extremely uncommon for a busy high school) I entered Social Studies, where the TV was on and we saw the 2nd plane hit, the towers fall, and the Pentagon being struck live on TV. I was so confused, had no idea what was going on, it was like I was living in a movie. After a surreal Social Studies class, we went to science where my science teacher refused to put on the TV or even mention one sentence about the events. Still mad about that reaction from him.

 

I remember I was picked up early from school and just saw everythong unfold on TV. Right there on the screen, people were jumping, running, it was terrifying. I remember I had a nightmare that night, I remember every detail about it.

 

This is truly a date that questioned our stability as a country, but we bounced back after the tragedy a strong, united country.

I understand what you're saying, but Trimble County probably holds onto those good old fashioned values better than alot of other schools. I'm pretty sure our principal led a prayer over the PA when JFK was shot.

I remember that day like it was yesterday. So sad. It was my first day at my job and needless to say we got nothing done that day. We went to NY while FF was waiting to leave for Afghanistan. It was hard to look at especially knowing that was why we were in NY b/c FF was leaving for overseas due to 9/11.

I was at my girlfriends house, and we woke up to the radio and thought it was a prank.

 

We got up and started watching TV, it was very surreal. We got ready for school, I was going to NKU at the time, I drove her to where she had left her car the night before. I heard my classes for the day were cancelled so I headed home and on the way home I got a speeding ticket! Ugh!

The cross was a nearby cross that was damaged as you can see and its up on a building right next door. The sphere of peace that sat outside between the two towers, it was damaged and is now down by battery park, where the statue of liberty is and has that eternal flame lit.

I was 8 months pregnant (imagine that!) with my second daughter. It was a gorgeous fall day, hot and sunny in Hoptown. I was driving to a friend's house and heard the radio. At first I thought it was a joke, because another channel had regular programming. The radio people thought a commercial airliner had mistakenly hit the WTC. I remember thinking maybe the pilot had a heart attack, or something. This was about 8:30 central time, I believe. I stopped at a gas station and filled up my car and turned it back on in time to hear the first tower had fallen. I got to my friend's house and we watched the rest of the morning on television. I was so terrified that I was getting ready to bring another child into the world and the world as I knew it was about to end. May all the souls lost that horrible day rest in peace.

The 2,993 confirmed victims of September 11th 2001 included innocent victims from 87 countries.

 

The youngest victim was 2 year old Christie Hanson - The oldest victim was 85 year old Robert Grant Norton.

 

3,251 children lost a Parent on that day.

Great post ScarHeel and I loved all of those songs as well. I remember getting up around the time of the 1st plane hitting the tower. Cvillecat called me and ask if I had the news/t.v. and I had not yet. I tuned in and we both just sat there on the phone in disbilief. When the 2nd plane hit then we knew for cetain that it was an attack on America. Actually I think that all of us had that idea before the 2nd hit. I thought of my wife and family. I called my wife at work just to tell her at I loved her along with calling family members.

 

I too have not forgotten and I never will :cry::fight:! I have family member in Afghanistan right now fighting for our freedom that the low life, ground dwelling rat (I cleaned that up considerably) is so jealous of and wants to destroy.

I don't want to get on a soapbox here but should anyone think that the threat of terroism is over then you are sadly mistaken. That is why imo we need a strong Military man in the presidency. One that will not cut the funding so bad that it weakens us and that our fighting men can respect the man as Commander and Chief.

I really like all of the songs listed (especially "where were you" and "have you forgotten" along with an old song by Merle Haggard that fits those feelings perfectly. "The Fighting Side Of Me" and one part that really nails the way that I feel about the ones that are complaining about this war....."I hear people talking bad about the way we have to live here in this country. Griping on the wars we fight and "griping" about the way things ought to be.

I don't mind them switching sides and standing up form things that they believe in but whe\en your running down my country man your walking on thw fightin side of me. They love our milk and honey and then preach about some other way of living... If you don't love it, leave it. :fight:

We have been to NYC several times since this event. It is amazing to me how the feelings just over come you when you get close to the site. Here are a couple of shots from our trips.

Third is the memorial on the wall inside Firehouse 10 of the men they lost on that terrible day!

 

Like I said, we have been back several times since 9/11/01. Each time, we visit FH10 to talk with the men and women there. Each time, we buy another t-shirt which benefits the memorial fund set up for their fallen brothers and sisters.

I, like others will never forget that horrible day. I sat in disbelief as I spoke to Oldrambler on the phone. I had a thousand different emotions running through my mind at the same time. I was sad for the families that would lose loved ones, sad for America and I was angry at the scum that would do something like this on our own soil. I had family living in the area and worried about their well being, were they nearby,did they survive? By the Grace of God we got word they were ok. Some families were not as fortunate as we were and my heart goes out to them.

I have always been a proud American but as the days passed I watched as all of America joined together to help ease the pain that was felt. People of all ages and races were standing side by side to help anyone that needed it.

As terrible as that day was I think it brought America back to it's roots and made us all realize that we can never take freedom for granted and how lucky we are to live in such a great country.

As we reflect back on the events of 9-11 I hope everyone takes a few minutes from their day and say a Prayer for our guys and gals in the military who have made the ultimate sacrifice. They are the backbone of this country and our true heroes. Without them we have no freedom.

I was at work when one of our warehouse guys came into the office and said a plane had hit one of the towers. The radio station they were listening to said it was a single engine plane like a cessna. We just figured somebody messed up bad. A little while later they came back in and said the second tower was hit and it was commercial airliners. Normally we would have been very busy that time of year but I don't think the phone rang one time, at least from a customer. I am not a person that remembers dates or events very well. I can only ever remember 3 people's birthdays (mine, my wife, my daughters) and struggle to remember two of them. I can't tell much about significant events that may have happened in my life however I will never forget where I was or even small details of that day.

 

Alan Jackson's 'Where Were You' chokes me up to this day when I hear.

I remember I was in my soph year of college and I was in my dorm room in Hester at Murray watching the Today show and they began reporting that a plane had hit the first trade center building and it was still unclear as to what happened, and they were showing it and then you see the 2nd plane hit, I skipped astronomy class that morning to watch it all day. Never will forget it

I was out shopping and got a call from my wife. I remember later that morning watching my 5 year old playing in the yard without a care and wondering what his world was going to be like.

I was sitting in Geometry my sophomore year in high school. The school receptionist came in and told us we needed to turn on the TV, that a plane had flown into the WTC. We watched from about 9:10 that morning until 11:30 when we got out for lunch.
