It is her show, I have no problem with her decision. If she is doing it to help Obama, then thats her choice...

 

I don't think any rational thinking person disagrees with your point (which has also been made by others). Of course its her choice and her right. But I didn't think that was the issue most posters were really addressing.

 

The issue to me is Oprah and the effect her partisan decision will have on her viewership. Will conservatives and independents now look at her as nothing more than a shill for Obama and perhaps stop watching her show, buying the books on her list (I think she still has her book club)? Will it affect advertisers? Admittedly I haven't watched her show very much, but she seems to portray an image of someone that wants to be taken seriously and fairly distributes information about serious issues particularly involving women (there are light hearted pieces also on the show). If she did in fact make a decision not to let Palin on the show because of her support of Obama, that decision greatly undermined that goal to be taken seriously in my opinion. If she did in fact make a decision not to let Palin on the show because of her support of Obama, her decision may reinforce the feeling out there with some people that some African Americans are supporting African Americans for no reason other than he is an African American (sort of) and are not going to give the R ticket a fair opportunity to "present their case" to the American public. Honestly, for Oprah, this was a danged if you do and danged if you don't situation in my opinion.

 

And while I don't think Oprah's decision is going to upset a large percentage of her viewers or voters, this race is going to be so close that just a small percentage of voters getting upset with Oprah's decision may make the difference. I know that some people felt that selecting Palin was not going to sway many Clinton supporters to the R ticket; but the last poll I saw said that 12% of the Clinton supporters were now going to vote for the R's. That's perhaps 12% of 18,000,000 which is a very large number and depending on where those 12% are located, may heavily sway electoral vote counts.

 

We'll probably never know, but I'd be curious to know if the Obama campaign asked Oprah not to let Palin on the show.

Agreed. Although, if we she was smart, Palin would get huge amounts of viewers. But it is definitely her right.

She did say after the DNC that she had to do whatever it took to get this man in the white house.:scared:

Oprah is a private citizen, she should, like us, should be able to say what she wants, support whom she wishes, and do so in public or private.

 

A short term ratings slump probably are not a big concern for Oprah. I'm pretty sure that outside of her show, she has plenty of other enterprises that could keep her afloat until the fickle public get over their snit.

 

The whole premise that entertainiers should pander to our whims is insane, IMO. There's simply no reason why as citizens of this country, with all the same rights as "the little people". We're not asked to keep our mouths shut, and neither should they.

 

In short, I'm sure Oprah will weather the storm...and if all else fails, I'll bet her bank account will allow her to retire in relative comfort. :lol:

I don't disagree with anything you said in your post. I'm sure she's not the least bit worried if her viewership drops, and like you said, she can afford it even if it does happen. Didn't mean to imply anything tothe contrary. I will say that I don't recall anyone saying that Oprah should pander to our whims. Where did that come from?

I'm not saying fickle as in people who are upset about Palin not being on her show are fickle. I'm saying fickle, as in the public is fickle. And if you don't believe me....come work at my job. :lol:
