I know that it's cool to have this song as your all-time favorite. WHY? IMHO this is the most OVER RATED song of all time. Someone please explain to me what is so great about this song? I like music from every era and genre, so I'm not against this song due to it's genre. I just think it is a very bad song. When Cobain died this song automatically became legendary, if he was still alive putting out music would this song be rated as highly.

Some of the LYRICS

Smells Like Teen Spirit

Load up on guns and bring your friends

It's fun to lose and to pretend

She's over bored and self assured

Oh no, I know a dirty word

With the lights out, it's less dangerous

Here we are now, entertain us

I feel stupid and contagious

Here we are now, entertain us

A mulatto

An albino

A mosquito

My libido

I'm worse at what I do best

And for this gift I feel blessed

Our little group has always been

And always will until the end

With the lights out, it's less dangerous

Here we are now, entertain us

I feel stupid and contagious

Here we are now, entertain us

And I forget just why I taste

Oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile

I found it hard, it's hard to find

Oh well, whatever, nevermind

With the lights out, it's less dangerous

Here we are now, entertain us

I feel stupid and contagious

Here we are now, entertain us

plus the word Hello is said at least 36 times

Are you kidding? It's lyrical genius! You must not be on the same plane as the rest of us. ;)

Can't stand the words in the song!! I could have done so much better...

Yeah he did rhyme, A mulatto, An albino, A mosquito, My libido. I see what you mean......lyrical Genius

Hurt by Trent Reznor is much better lyrically than this drivel.

Only words I knew from the song was, "And on and on and on and on... and on and on and on and on.... and on and on and on and on.... Here we are now, entertain us. I feel stupid, and contagious." The rest of the song I would just make noises. Nobody can tell the difference at karaoke night.

I appreciate "Smells Like Teen Spirit" because it brought some great music to the forefront... But it is not the best song of the era, and is not even the best Nirvana song. That doesn't mean I don't jam it from time to time, though.

Kurt, Krist, and Dave all have talked about how much they grew to hate Teen Spirit. In no way did they even plan on the song getting as big as it did, and after reaching that status the Band refused to play it.

Kurt has also said that he didn't intend for his lyrics to be all cryptic and not make sense to everyone, but he just said that was his just his way of making art. Kind of like an abstract painting with words.

And, you got those words wrong. He was actually saying "hello, hello, hello" … :D

It's understandable, though, because Cobain wasn't always easy to understand.

I vote for one more option in the poll: Great song, but not greatest ever. And not Nirvana's greatest ever, either.

For what it's worth, I wasn't a big fan of Nirvana when they first hit big. I just didn't buy into the hype, and came around to them gradually. But the guy was a fantastic songwriter. And part of their appeal at the time is the fact that it was so incredibly different from what was going on in hard rock at the time. You have to remember that hair metal was dominating the hard rock scene at the time, and people were starved for something different from effeminate clowns like Poison, Winger, etc.

I read the first post/lyrics and realized it. That was the point I was trying to get across. I did not even understand the portions I thought I understood  No person has ever corrected me because I do not think anyone has ever really known unless they looked up the lyrics.

I could never understand the words to it. It sounds like a large dog growling.

I lived and died with Kurt Cobain. I was a huge Nirvana fan.

And I once played Teen Spirit at the top of my speakers capacity at an outdoor Baptist Church barbeque, just to make them mad. Just the Kurt in me coming out.

This thread is blasphemy.

Keep in mind I grew to become a huge fan of Nirvana/Cobain. I just wasn't initially.
