This squad resembles the '05 team that also followed a state champion team. It took the '05 team some time to jell. The '05 coaching staff and players also took some shots. But once they found thier mojo, they rolled to the 1/4 finals until they faced a very good Lex Cath team and an outstanding QB by the name of Justing Burke. Take it easy on the 'Birds. This season is just getting started and they will improve all the way down to the pizza box.

 

This is the time they need the moral support from the football community... not condemnation. The line will be fine... the skilled positions will continue to develop and all will be well at the end of the day.

The Birds looked a little tentative and maybe not quite ready to fill the big shoes, but I didn't feel that there was cause for alarm. It's a long season and they should get better as they get more experience. Next week could get ugly if they play like they did tonight, but it's Colerain. It's not supposed to be pretty. Connor would have made tonight a much handier win, but they figured out how to win without him, which has to help their confidence.

I think they'll be fine come November, which is all that really matters.

I'm sure she did see the same game you did and she wasn't wearing blinders. She's just maybe a bit more understanding of what to expect from a young squad at this point (and has a son on the team...some day if your lucky enough to have a son on the team, you'll understand).

 

Just be patient young grasshopper. This is a very inexperienced and young team, particularly on the O line. Its going to take some time playing together before the O line gels. And you are probably going to see more inconsistent play throughout the early to mid part of the season. The line looked great against Beechwood and Male. This week we struggled. And give some credit to Ryle. They really improved their quickness on D this year from last year. I was talking to one of our O coaches after the game and he basically said that Ryle had a better Defensive plan than we had Offensive plan. Ryle ran a lot of nice defensive stunts that our young offensive linemen had not seen in a game before, which makes you look slower than you are. I think we'll be fine on the O line. I know you love to jump on the Birds and criticize but be patient.

 

We need to hold on to the ball better and need to learn not to force the long ball. I saw in this morning's paper that Tony said he likes to throw the long ball. That's great if the deep receiver is open, but with more experience in games, he'll learn not to throw it deep if the receiver is covered, but rather find the open receivers underneath (and they were).

 

Rosenhagen did a great job kicking off and I thought Weinel did a nice job with the extra points and field goals. Last week some critics were lambasting our kicking game. A week later it looks really good. That inconsistency is simply a by product of a lot of youth and inexperience being on the field.

 

D looked pretty dang solid. Kept nice pressure on the Hempel boy, who is going to wake up very sore this morning. But he continues to impress me. Nice skills and a tough kid. As is typical of most teams, our D is ahead of our O at this point. Run and pass defense was pretty darn good. Much improved tackling this week (although not facing Justin Green may have played a little part in it )

 

All in all, we played okay but that's about it. I don't think any one: coach, player or fan thinks we did a really good job. But at this juncture, a win is a win is a win. A tough win might have been the best thing that could have happened to the Birds to get them really, really focused on Colerain (not that you need much extra motivation for that task :thumb:).

Sometimes one should not be so critical... calling the O-line the worst in 10 years is wreckless and not warranted. We all agree that they have some work to do and kinks to work out. They may or may not develop into the line that we were blessed with last year. But they will get better. They will work to the best of thier ability to help the team. They are a great bunch of decent young men.

I thought Dale did a nice job of getting several sophomores in the game as well at times. I noticed Sullivan #45 at noseguard, Duenas in there at CB, Gold at safety, etc. I dont think it matters if the Birds win by 4 touchdowns or 1 as long as they are gaining experience and getting better. Nice job by the Birds last night and Im sure they will address some things and be fired up for Friday.

Give the Raiders two of their missing starters on offense and the Raiders look better on O and score more points last night. Please don't start the handier win with Conner. Injuries are a part of football. The teams played with who they had, Highlands was the better team last night, but not nearly as dominant over Ryle as last year. The teams are MUCH closer this year, especially by the end of the year. As you say, that's all that matter. Good luck to the Birds. Great program and team.

Congrats 'Birds! Usually I'm the first HHS fan to panic and declare that the sky is falling when HHS doesn't beat a team by a ton, but come on, Ryle is a good squad (they showed it in their scrimmage against CCH) and HHS beat them by 20. Last year HHS won by 28. I'm worried that some HHS fans will develop the notion this year that last year's team was absolutely flawless. A 20 vs a 28 point victory seems pretty consistent to me! Sure, HHS has things to work on, but for most of their players it was their first varsity start EVER. I'm sure there were jitters.

Pretty harsh assessment of a team that won by 20. Is there work to be done? There always is. I was impressed by HHS kicking game, and the D. As far os the O Line let's keep in mind that there are 4 guys that basically took their 1st varsity snaps last night. Overall I thought they did pretty well. I would like to to give Kudos to Ryle. They played a very hard fought physical game and should fare well in their district. On to Colerain.

Yes they do a pretty good job of that. The thing is that it's more on the position coaches to rotate kids in or at least have them ready. I notice that only "1" Senior didn't get in the game, specials or game time, other than Josh Conner of course. Getting experience is great for the future. I hope those kids play JV today because they need the extra game time experience.

Have you ever thought that Ryle has a good D? Mike Wolfe is one of the better D cordinators in the state. They came in with a good game plan and executed very well on D. Adjustments were made and HHS won by 20. HHS is young up front but have the talent, not to mention probably the best O-line coach in the state I think you will see by the end of the year that a 20 point victory over Ryle will have been pretty impressive.
