August 25, 200818 yr There's a few bright things to take out of the way they've been playing recently. A lot of young talent. Dickerson has looked great, and he has the most extra base hits for anyone to start their career. Or something like that. Heard it on FSN after the Reds game. Obviously that stat does not mean much, but just something cool. I like the direction this team is headed, but I'm afraid that the end of the season can't get here quick enough - particularly for our pitching staff. I'm nervous about the health of Harang, Cueto & Volquez. I have a difficult time justifying running them out there every 5th game in "meaningless" games. I was hoping that Dusty took Cueto out today due to his pitch count. He threw 74, which is about perfect for a young pitcher this late in the year. Unfortunately, that wasn't the reason. There's a lot of young talent on this team and some of it belongs here, some of it doesn't. Regardless, this offseason is going to be a big one and, with Walt at the helm, I think we'll make a few good decisions. And finally, will Dusty be here next year? I think so, but I hope Jocketty tries to persuade La Russa & Duncan. Say what you want about him, but I'd love to have him in my team's dugout.
August 25, 200818 yr If the Reds by some chance do "shock the world" and get rid of Dusty and bring in someone like Larusa. They would make a run for the playoffs next year. With Dusty at the helm, they end up with 75 wins at best.

There is no reason to shut down Volquez. Volquez threw nearly 180 innings last year at various levels. He's at 157 now. If the Reds keep his pitch counts reasonable for the rest of the season, he should be fine.

Not to mention I'd be interested to see if our defense and pen will allow him to get to 18 wins.

Cueto will miss a start. Just wondering ... how does a pitcher hyperextend his elbow?

August 25, 200818 yr Bailey is hurt too. This has been a miserable year for the Reds. Don't get me wrong most are, but this one just seems awful to me.
