Something that has not been considered...

 

We talk about the heat index and hydration during practice. There is one thing the coaches have very little control over and that is hydration BEFORE practice. I, of course, am not saying that is the case here, just that really, that's the most important time to get hydrated.

I feel this kid's life is far more important than any high school football team. It seems this coach was out to prove a point at any cost. Unfortunately it cost an athlete his life. What an idiot, the coach should be fired and everyone from the coach to the AD, principal, school board, and the Metro Louisville should account for this ridiculous act.

This is SO sad. My heart breaks when I think about a kid busting his tail to run fast gassers, and he is rewarded with death. It is simply unthinkable and so tragic.

I'm not saying that coaches did or didn't allow kids water but no one should ever for any reason be denied water.

Not only that, a nurse watching the soccer game came over to check on max, but was told he's okay. She said he lookedunconsious, but said she didn't identify herself as a nurse. They took him to put him under water. His body temp was 107 at the hospital. This sad story could get ugly.

Their spokeswoman told me, that due to some witnesses coming forward, and rampant rumors about Max's death, they felt compelled to dig a little deeper. This is currently under way.

 

Louisville Metro Police Homicide is also examining the case at the request of the Commonwealth Attorney. There is currently NO criminal probe underway. Asst. LMPD Chief Troy Riggs says it's a fairly common thing to examine this type of case. This isn't to say a formal investigation won't happen, or find some wrong doing--but nothing appears imminent right now.

The bottom line, this wasn't a football related death....this was a coach(s) making kids run till they puked, overheated, and sadly Max Gilpin paid with his life. If it wasn't criminal, it was gross negligence at the least on the part of the coaching staff.

The worst part of tragedies like this is that no matter what caused it to happen this family and community is suffering, so for their sake let's let this conversation about who's to blame stop at this point....... I don't care if anyone is to blame.. A young man has passed away and his family and the authorities will find out what the cause was and then we will see SOLID information regarding what really happened.

 

For now though let's just let them (family, friends AND coaches) deal with this tragedy without it turning into fodder for a debate amongst people that weren't even there.

Just wondering if after the alleged players reported water being withheld if the KHSAA is going to have an investigation of their own into this.Death or no death this is an intolerable action if true.Dehydrating kids doesn't make their character stronger,condition them better mentally or physically.I personally have no problem with extra conditioning, suspensions,reduced playing time,removal from the team if necessary.There are many ways to disipline these CHILDREN without putting them in danger!I don't think there is a poster on BGP that doesn't have a passion for football but would be enraged if THEIR CHILD WAS REFUSED WATER ON A HOT AUGUST DAY!!! That being said I don't know if the article in the CJ is true but if it is,this is a truly sad statement for what is going on in our world.I ask my fellow posters: would you stand for this if it was YOUR CHILD!!!! I KNOW SOME OF YOU PERSONALLY AND THINK I KNOW THE ANSWER!

Jude, you may not care if anyone was to blame but as a parent of a sophmore football player I do care. I don't want this to ever happen again. Kids will get hurt, sometimes fatally, from football related contact. Kids will sometimes collapse and die from undiagnosed heart conditions during exertion. By all accounts, that's not what happened here. By all accounts Max Gilpin died due to hyperthermia. I think it's inexcusable and there needs to be an investigation to find out exactly what happened and why.

My guess is the parents of the other kids do care. We will see next week when/if/who shows up for the next practice. It's going to be a rough season for these kids/families for a lot of reasons.
