2008 Beijing Summer Olympics

Featured Replies

I caught the tail end of a discussion on that from the NBC commentators, so I didn't get all the details on this... Is that an olympic rule that all athletes have to be at least 16? Or, is that China's rule? Or, is it just the rule for gymnastics?

Just asking because during the parade of nations I seem to remember that they showed a platform diver (from which country, I cannot recall) that was only fourteen. So, what's the deal?

I'm not sure about other sports, but in gymnastics the competitor must not be younger than 16 during the Olympic year, per IOC rules. I cannot think of another sport where being younger would be to one's benefit, other than womens' gymnastics. Being younger, lighter and less developed would definitely provide a competitive edge. According to Bela Karolyi, falsifying documents has been a common practice in Eastern Europe in the past, and he believes China is doing that today.

Gotcha...makes sense. Thanks for the info!

What was up with the USA volleyball team wearing glasses with no lenses?

If those girls are 16, then I am at least approaching 40.:irked:

I was thinking about this year's Team USA basketball team and comparing it to teams from the past. It is amazing to think about the original Dream Team. They would beat this year's team by 30 points. That team consisted of: Earvin "Magic" Johnson, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, Patrick Ewing, David Robinson, John Stockton, Karl Malone, Clyde Drexler, Chris Mullin, Scottie Pippen, Charles Barkley and Christian Laettner. Here is a clip of the original Dream Team:

When you look at those players, I don't think we will ever see a team like that one. Simply amazing.

There is no way that those Chinese girls are 16...so I am definitely rooting against them hard core. Some barely look like they are 13.

I think they don't really need to shade their eyes, and they have gotten in the habit of having something on their face, so they poke the lenses out. Kinda strange, but whatever, lol.

Actually, they said it was a sponsorship thing. Maybe Oakley requires that they wear the glasses each game, and this game happens to be played in the nighttime hours.

Karolyi said they were 12 and 14 years old. So your guess was pretty much dead on.

Ain't America great!?

Yeah, I thought I heard some where that they were in a International competition a year ago and at the time the same girls were 13 in that compeition...a year later they are 16? Give me a break.

Can there be a more stupid event in Olympics than synchronized diving? And water polo is kind of silly, too. I'm sure it's tough to tread water and swim non-stop for four 7-minute periods, but an olympic sport? I mean, come on, mowing my backyard in 90 degree weather is pretty tough also and takes a little endurance, but they don't make it part of the Olympics.

I was thinking they were like Rip Hamilton and just played really well with them on, so they didn't want to take any chances, LOL. I'm sure it probably is a sponsor thing, though.

Speaking of hot, did anyone see the javeline thrower from Paraguay?
