It happened again! (Squirrel attack)

Featured Replies

Believe it or not -- and you probably won't -- it just happened to me again! After posting here earlier today, I wandered out onto the back deck by myself. I was sitting there and suddenly caught a glimpse of movement to my left. It was a squirrel!

When I first spotted him, he was coming down out of the tree, onto the deck railing. At first he approached slowly. But as soon as he saw me watching, he bounded wildly over from the side rail to the front rail -- completely bypassing the more traditional route over the swinging deck door. This was clearly a provocative gesture, meant to ramp up the tension.

Next thing I know, he's in front of me, not more than five feet away. At this distance, I was an easy jump away. Suddenly realizing the absurdity of the situation I was now in (and thinking of you guys), I started to laugh nervously. This apparently threw him off his game and he scampered back to the safety of the tree.

But it wasn't over...not even...

Next thing I know, he's climbing the wall of the house, headed toward me on my extreme left. I think he was going for the wooden trellis I was sitting under, in hopes of a surprise banzai-style attack. But I spied him and foiled his scheme!

Back to the tree.

Moments later it was de ja vu all over again. This guy was totally obsessed! Here he comes along the rail again, hopping wildly over the lamps affixed to the deck posts. He was clearly trying to intimidate me with his jumping prowess at this point. He lands, once again, right in front of me. A stare down begins.

I stare at him...he stares at me. It was like that YouTube video with the startled hamster. Although, I think I was probably the hamster in this case.

Suddenly, he makes some very suggestive jumping motions, as if to indicate that he was fully prepared to employ the final move. I swear, at that point, I honestly thought he was going to jump on my face. And you know, I'm thinking that wouldn't have been a particularly titillating experience for either of us. He would likely have been thrown a considerable distance onto the unforgiving concrete below. And I would be on my way to the hospital right now...with squirrel rabies.

Can you imagine how hard it would be to get a date in that situation? I mean, bad breath...poor grooming...even a grating personality -- you still got a chance. But just mention that, oh, by the way, you have squirrel rabies. Well, that's going to be a deal-breaker with most women.

The stand-off ended when he turned-tail and ran in a blind panic toward safety. Okay, actually that was me; but the comotion scared him enough to send him scurrying back to his lair.

Dude, if you'd just give him back the fedora, he'd leave you alone.

Ironic, isn't it?! I think they have connections somewhere on this board. :irked:

Oh I don't know ... the only deal breaker in some cases is if you're still breathing!!!!

Besides I think you look charming in the fedora.

I'm sorry, can't help but laugh.....

You should have employed the crane technique. If do right, no can defend.

Yeah, and I should look like Ralph Machio.

You know, I've read a lot of posts today that reminded me of that old Jim Stafford song "Spiders and Snakes". Perhaps someone can take some liberties with the lyrics and come up with "Spiders and Squirrels."

Yeah, and I should look like Ralph Machio.

You and me both. The couple of times I tried it, I nearly kicked the TV screen in. And that was on young legs on the living room floor; not on top of some piling on the beach...

Are you sure this isn't what was really happening?
