Track The Reds (Week 13)

Well, outside of the fact he's been pretty much a pitching machine since it happened...

Yeah, so everybody is looking for an excuse. Personally, I think the relief appearance is a cop out, but it is what it is.

Its pretty obvious that his problem is lack of control. Either something is wrong with his mechanics or he just doesn't have a good feel for it right now. It may have started with his relief outing, maybe not. He's had one good outing since then against Boston. That day he has his good control and he did just fine. Thats just my opinion.

Only 7 walks in the 6 games since the debacle. Control isn't the issue. Getting light up is...

It's easy to look at the numbers and say that he hasn't been struggling with his control. Sure, 7 walks in 6 games isn't bad. Actually, that is pretty solid.

However, it is the pitch that is IN the strike zone that he's missing on that is causing the problems.

That's because his fastball has lost the late zip that makes him so effective. He can't throw anything by anyone right now. He's also missing his spots right down the middle too often. At best it has arm fatigue written all over it. It's the debacle mixed with the fact he's the most worked guy in the bigs over the last three years...

You should know better than that. A pitcher can be wild in the strike zone, which will cause him to get light up. Harang has never had the stuff where he could get away leaving pitches up in the zone or missing the corners. That's why he has always given up so many HR's. Now, he's just missing his spots more often than he has before and it's showing.

For a month. You don't find it odd it all coincides with San Diego? Seriously???

So it is his control, or lack thereof, that is hurting him.

I'm not buying the fact that 60 extra pitches have had this big of an effect on Harang-a-tang. Now if you want to talk about the past 3 seasons, then we can talk. But to attribute his recent struggles to the San Diego game is far fetched, IMO.

He's still on pace to have right around 200 K's

He had his stuff against Boston. 7.0, 4 hits, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 K's.

If he was a hard throwing guy like Zumaya or someone who relied on blowing people away with his fastball, then you might be on to something.

I read an article a few years ago (when Kerry Wood & Mark Prior began their injury problems) about pitchers who had thrown 200+ innings, and how that affected their careers. It'd be interesting to see again, and I hope Harang can avoid being another name on that list.

Does the relief outing have something to do with it? Sure

Is it the only reason like everyone is saying? No chance.

So an in between 4 innings the day after you threw on the side couldn't trigger arm issues that were inevitable at some point in the near future? His velocity and location were fine to that point. Since then, only once in 7 starts. Coincidence? Yeah right...

Good point. It's not his "stuff" that's getting him hit. It's location, location, location.

Where did I say it's the only factor? I didn't. But you simply can't deny it's a big factor in his recent slide...
