If I was a senior at powell I would agree with the decision because winning becomes contagious and given time coach whitaker will make them winners

 

I don't see Coach Whitaker staying long enough to fix the issues. Does he have the support to keep him there? What I mean is, I know they may want him there, but are they supporting him to get the job done?

Stick1, while I respect your opinions very, very highly, I don't agree with the bolded part of your post as a justification for Powell cancelling the game. I can with a little research rattle of quite a few smaller teams that play bigger teams and don't come out of the games so beat up that it destroys the competitiveness of the team. Looking just at N. Ky: Beechwood plays CovCath and scrimmages Highlands. NewCath plays CovCath and scrimmages Dixie Heights. CovCath plays Cinti X and Cinti Elder. Highlands plays Colerain. I think this year Holy Cross plays CovCath. Those are just a couple of examples that quickly come to mind.

 

I really don't think the fear of injuries has anything to with cancelling this game. I think this is simply a result of the folks at Powell not agreeing with the KHSAA's decision to put Harlan in 3A and the folks at Powell trying to make a statement. Nothing more, nothing less. I can understand why they don't like the decision, but forfeiting a game is not the way to handle the problem. If anything, in my opinion, its something to get the Powell kids even more fired up for the game. Nothing better than the underdog motivation in my mind to get kids fired up.

 

I always respect your opinion too. I'll be honest I don't know much about the whole situation. I understand what you are saying about playing bigger schools but I do think there are cases. You list schools like New Cath, Beechwood etc playing up. How many guys do those schools suite up? I will bet that Powell Co isn't close to suiting up as many as those two teams. New Cath, Beechwood, Cov Cath have A LOT of depth for their classifications. Powell Co doesn't. I have been around schools coaching wise where we were set back a lot by playing schools we shouldn't have been playing at that point in the programs history. It might not have anything to do with this situation but I've seen it happen first hand.

When you are rebuilding a program it makes sense to soften the schedule a bit to get games that your team can have a real shot to win or compete well in, but in this case to just throw in the towel on the district games over one game that your staff considers to be unfair isn't putting your players first. IMHO

If they were going the route as most has describe and for the reasons listed they should of dropped all district games and not competed in a district for a couple of years. If that would of been the route I could understand but remember they still have the best team in the district on the schedule.

The last I heard, a team from PENN was wanting to meet half way. I don't know if it can be worked out but it is an option.

Could make for a memorable overnight experience for the players.
