I like it against Russell, but we cant forget that Russell's new QB throws the ball extremely well.

That is the same lineup as the 5-3, except the corners are LB's and the St's are press corners on the edge attacking each play -- plus the DT's are angling into B gap with the NT filling/lining up to A gap to the wing side.

You have to have faith that your pass defenders can recognize the pass quickly when they know that run is the first option on most plays.

 

In addition, you have to have 5 guys who can successfully cover man-to-man while playing on the LOS -- in other words, you gotta have lots of speed.

I dont see this happening, but I'm afraid if the D doesnt change this year it is going to take 40 points to win, like last year.

I saw that game, one of the better high school football games I have seen.

 

The funny part was, I did not know who the coach of Portsmouth West was, and they came out in orange and black and did the exact same pregame routine that Raceland has done for years. Then they lined up on defense and ran Bill Tom Ross's defense (5-3), and their first offensive series they ran Bill Tom Ross's version of the wishbone. I could read what all the plays were going to be. I kept telling one of my Russell friends what was going to happen, he thought I was a fortune teller. Then I asked someone, who had a program, who is the coach of Portsmouth West? They said, of course, Mike Sammons. Then it all made sense.

So you are saying to let the play come to you, in other words -- these guys need to stay at home on the following plays:

 

Trap and Dive: NG, DT's, MLB

 

Boot and Sweep: DE's and OLB's

 

 

I would have the DE go as deep as the ball is and the corners to the line that will keep the runnner inside then your NG, DT and linebackers can make the play.
