The most important aspect of the 2008 team is that they believe in the system and each other. They are a confident bunch. They have a destiny and understand how to reach it. This will be the first year that each team member has had Coach Sammons as his only head coach at GCHS!

 

The offense will continue to impress and improve from the last 6 games of 2007 when GCHS averaged over 35 points per game. The Tony Franklin System has worked wonders for the Musketeers. Look for the Musketeers to challenge the box and the field much more this year.

 

The defense must improve since it gave up 342 points in 13 games in 2007. The defensive unit will be a quick bunch -- good, tough hitters, too. Spring ball was a success for much of the defensive unit as the players now have a better grasp of Coach Sammons' defensive philosophy.

Resect and Support have to be earned, and I think it started at the end of year. I think it showed in the big crowd for the BC game and a suprisingly big turn out all the way up at Harrison County. Success breads Support and I think last year started a very good trend for GC football.

I believe that most of the skill players have a great shot at playing RB in either the 1 or 2 back set.

 

Either way, there exists a plethora of speed available to run the Tony Franklin System again in 2008.

 

Zach Smith is playing baseball this year. Coach Logan has him pinch-running when he isn't starting (in an already talent-rich baseball lineup). He will have a terrific senior season.

 

Drew Hannah and David Berry will be part of the mix in the offense; however, it is tough to say at which positions each will play. Look for them to have terrific senior seasons out in space.

 

Michael Grubb has good hands, too. He should make some great plays as a possession receiver. With his height, he should have a fantastic senior season.

 

At this point, it is tough to say what impact the 2008 sophomore class will bring to the varsity level. I'm not a big fan of discussing players who have never made an impact at the varsity level except in mop-up situations. Prove your worth on the field first, then let the chips fall where they may.

Now a very, very , very important question? Who the heck is going to Kick? We have to find a kicker this year, I dont care if you go to the girls soccer games and find one.

While that is true, its easier said than done.

Ryan Adkins (Sr to be) and Michael Gullett (Jr to be) came out for Spring Football.

 

Both show tremendous potential to assist on both offense and defense.

Ryan differently could help the offense as another target for Craft to throw to.

If their schedule is the same will they be able to compete with what Russell and Raceland have returning? I know Raceland returns almost their whole team.

I may eat my words, but I do not see them competing with Russell, Raceland, Ashland, and Mason. But they will compete in their district and may even repeat as champions. Good luck GC.

GC also is crossing the Ohio river to play Wheelersburg. I consider them equal to Russell. Even when they are suppose to be down, they win games.

Wheelersburg will be a tough game for GC. For that matter they would be a tough game for anyone on the Ky side.

There is never a time in a kids high school career that he should not receive support or respect from the folks in the community or administration. Success can be measured in more than just wins or losses, unfortunately some never see it that way.

High school athletes work their tails off from day one and I'm confident the GC players are no different.

If someone does not support the kids through the tough times then IMO they should not jump on their bandwagon when things are going well.

I believe that Wheelersburg is for most years anyway is a better football team than Russell. That is not meant as a cut on Russell at all, just that I think that those programs like W-Burg and Ironton (who I know is rebuilding big time but it won't takle long) could play and beat most anyone on our side of the river in most any year. Like I said, I know full well what a great program that Russell has and has had for years and years and my statement is jmo.

Unless those programs are way down, imo that the Ohio Schools for the most part are better than we are. Even programs like Rock Hill, Coal Grove and a couple of others can be very good.
