What is Jimmy Carter thinking? Meeting with the leader of Hamas? I thought Jimmy was all about the peace process, I don't see how legitimizing Hamas will in anyway help the mideast peace process.

More meddling from Carter

Former president evidently will stop at nothing to undermine U.S. interests

Augusta Chronicle Editorial Staff

Saturday, April 12, 2008

Is there no America-hating, anti-Israel thug that Jimmy Carter wouldn't do business with? The nation's 39th president has long since shattered the tradition that former presidents refrain from criticizing their successors, even when they are from different political parties. The man who was arguably the worst president of the 20th century hasn't stopped running his mouth against all his successors, including fellow Democrat Bill Clinton, since Ronald Reagan routed him from office in 1980.

But now Carter -- who once called the current Bush administration's Mideast and Iraq policies "criminal" -- appears to be going beyond his usual wrong-headed, mean-spirited criticisms to actively undermine his government's foreign policy.

That, in our view, makes him the real criminal.

On his Mideast travels this month, Carter is planning to meet in Syria next week with Khaled Meshai, the exiled head henchman of Hamas, the Palestinian terrorist group that refuses to recognize the existence of Israel, is waging war against it, and pledges to destroy the Jewish state.

Perhaps Carter's visit with the notorious terrorist leader shouldn't be such a surprise, given that he always has favored Hamas over Fatah, the more moderate Palestinian group that Hamas clashes with ideologically -- and sometimes in street battles.

Carter was terrible foreign relations president, and now he thinks he his the greatest ambassador for the free world.

I truly believe Carter is a good person. His work with Habitat for Humanity is a testament to that. My admiration for him stops and starts there. He was a joke as a president, he is a joke as a so-called statesman, and he is certainly a joke as a credible spokesman for his party. Carter makes decisions that boggle the mind, always siding with the Palestinians or Islamic extremists, when in reality, these are the groups mostly responsible for his ouster as president. Reagan whipped his butt, then cleaned up his messes. Carter has definately "lost his peanuts." The only question in my mind is "how how long ago did he lose them?"

Or did he ever actually have any???

It truly hurts my feelings to hear such horrible things said about him becaues I truly do believe that he is a good man. On the other hand, someone should tell him to go back to Georgia and stop thinking that anyone cares what he thinks about anything. Just be a farmer Jimmy. He's like a family member that you love but you just wished they would stay hidden.

I have absolutely zero respect for Jimmy Carter. This country would be a better place had he never been born. I give him credit for bringing Habitat for Humanity to the nation's attention, but everything that he has done since has brought more aid and comfort to America's enemies than to our own citizens.

Carter is sealing his fate as the worst U.S. president in history. And that's hard to do when your competition is the likes of Millard Fillmore, James Buchanan, and Warren Harding.

And, no, I'm not going to include Richard Nixon. He made stupid mistakes on domestic decisions, but his foreign policy saves him to a small degree.

Where is the "shaking my head" smilie? You've went a little over the top, here.

"Jimmy Carter is planning to lead a study tour to Israel, the West Bank, Egypt, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Jordan in a continued effort to support peace, democracy and human rights in the region." (from the 3rd link)

Now what makes him evil here? Somehow I don't imagine that is will be a "thumbs up, gold old boy" convention. Whether anything can be gained is an entirely different matter.

I don't think so. Carter allowed the US to be humiliated for much of his single term and he has spent years trying to make himself look better at the expense of his successors. We are just lucky that the Soviets did not do more to take advantage of the golden opportunity that a Carter presidency presented them.

Had Carter never been born, it is very unlikely that Democrats would have provided our nation with a worse president and the Iranian Revolution might have turned out much differently.

Looking on the bright side, Carter was such a horrible president, there was no chance that Ronald Reagan would not become president. Even a mediocre Democratic president might have performed well enough to have won a second term in the aftermath of Watergate but Carter was far from mediocre.

I guess my problem is with his meeting with the leader of Hamas a man that renounces Israel's right to exist, thinks the holocaust is a myth and would like to rid the world of all Jew's. A former President of the United States meeting with someone in this way legitimizes his group and himself as the leader as something more than the terrorist group that they are.

Ignoring the group will not make it cease to exist. I think there is quite a difference in a current president doing this and a former one. I am positive that Carter is not seeking to legitimize anything, but to promote (however futile his attempt might be) peace. I don't think it makes him treasonous, anti-American, pro-violence, or anti-semitic. He's just a man trying to do something that is almost certain to fail.

Disagree. I have respect for much of what Mr. Carter has done and has attempted to do. Unlike Mr. Bush, I am confident that J.E. Carter is a man who desires peace.

Now If Bush Sr. had kept his sperm to himself and never produced "W", the country would certainly be better off than it is today.

It does not really matter whether Jimmy Carter wants and desires peace. His actions (and inactions) while president destabilized the Middle East and have contributed to the death of thousands around the world. Not content with sowing the seeds for ever expanding global terror during his four years in office, Carter continues to devote his life to creating chaos around the world. He is a buffoon.

The jury is still out on George W. Bush's presidency but it is hard to imagine that historians in the next century will view Carter's presidency as anything but an absolute failure. IMO, at some point in our future, historians will also scratch their collective head and wonder why people like Jimmy Carter were not charged with treason for legitimizing terrorist organizations and attempting to undermine the foreign policy of the United States.

Jimmy Carter will be a guest today on This Week with George Stephanopoulos.
