Carter needs to be locked up. The sooner the better.

Jimmy Carter has made "friends" with many of America's enemies but I am not sure how that helps us as a nation.

I come to that conclusion because they are best known for multiple suicide bombings and other attacks directed against civilians. I come to that conclusion because we support Israel and they don't like that one little bit. Kid yourself all you want, but giving terrorists a voice only emboldens them. That's all Jimmy is doing, he's a fool.

As a private citizen, Jimmy Carter has no right to conduct American foreign policy. Carter had his shot conducting our foreign policy and he failed miserably. It is time for him to accept responsibility for his many failures and retire from politics.

If no private citizen has a right to conduct affairs of American foreign policy, then I suppose that missionaries and relief organizations should cease their efforts as well.

The US State Department has asked Carter not to meet with Hamas on multiple occasions. Carter is lying when he says that he will not be negotiating with Hamas, Syria, and the other parties with whom he intends to meet. Carter has no right to redefine the word "negotiate" and he will be in direct violation of the Logan Act if he moves forward with the planned meetings.

This section shall not abridge the right of a citizen to apply himself, or his agent, to any foreign government, or the agents thereof, for redress of any injury which he may have sustained from such government or any of its agents or subjects.

Rockmom, your willingness to defend Carter from the attacks on here is commendable, but I think it's some what blinding your ability to look at this logically. Pres. Carter's meeting with Hamas, whether as negotiations or as peace keeping, is wrong. It undermines the official U.S. govt's efforts to address Hamas in the matter that this administration deems appropriate. Furthermore, it creates certain perceptions throughout the world. And as they say, perception is reality to many.

 

Pres Carter had his opportunity to provide his influence on world affairs when he was Pres. He may very well get tabbed to act on the U.S.' benefit if Obama or Clinton get elected. But when the current administration asks him not to meet he should not, if for no other reason out of respect for the office of the Presidency. As a former President, I'd expect him to understand that. I'm quite certain that if, while he was handling the Iran hostage situation, former Pres. Ford had been meeting with the Ayattolah, against Pres. Carter's wishes, he'd have been hotter than an afternoon in a August peanut field in Georgia.

 

I can defend Pres. Carter against a lot. He's a very caring man with values that I place a lot of importance on. But I don't care who you are or who is the President, when the current President asks you not to meet with some foreign govt, you don't do it.
