How will pinning higher taxes on oil companies lower gasoline and diesel prices? When and where has raising taxes on a product ever resulted in lower prices?

 

Ace I fully respect your opinions and believe you are right on several points. First, I don't know what it will do from a gas price stand point. But I do know it will at least tame their record profits some, which honestly will make me feel better, at least i'm being less cheated. Again, nobody really has tried to put a leash on big oil at this point so we don't know what kind of effect it's gonna have. All I know is each year, there record multi-billion dollar profits are only going to increase.

 

The most important thing is using the tax dollars to promote new alternatives. Right now it's just not happening.

 

I saw John McCains plan today and it really freightened me. His plan to lower gas is to stop tapping the reserves, which makes no sense. He says we are going to be in Iraq for 100 more years, and there will always be the threat of Iran and Venzuela cutting off oil, so I don't get this in the first place. Secondly, Bush did this a few summers ago, and still might each summer, but it only saves us about 2-3 cents a gallon.

Not to get into a war of words on this topic but his hand is as dirty as they get when it comes to oil.

Like I said above if you really think the R'S OR THE D'S are going to do anything to stop this then you are as blind as they want you to be.

 

When you leader took over oil was 31 bucks a Br. and he, your leader said the admin. before him had to grip on this and he was going to take care/fix it. Wel now with him fixing it the price is now over 112 bucks a Br.

 

Bring back to the admin. that had no handle on this.

So GW is solely responsible for the price going up $81? Man is more powerful then I thought.

I find this line of reasoning--we'd better extend special tax breaks to the oil companies so they will sell us cheap gas--to be laughable. What's next? Should we enact special tax incentives to automakers so we can have cheaper cars? Maybe a special tax incentive to bakeries so the American public can enjoy cheaper doughnuts? Or how about a special tax break to professional sports team owners so a night at the ballpark with the family might not be so expensive?

 

They all sound like great ideas to me, after all we can just keep putting the cost of government on credit...

 

 

Yes we should. Actually we should eliminate all corporate taxes completely. Corporate taxes on C Chapter corporations are nothing other than double taxation on income. The C Chapter corporation pays taxes on the income and then the shareholders then get taxed on that same income when it is distributed in the form of dividends. And there is no doubt about it, the consumers, in the price of goods purchased, pay the additional taxes.

Can someone answer my two senerios and tell me why they would be bad?

 

1. In the short term use the fuel that we have in the US, (which some say would last 50 years). During this time develop alternative fuels. If nothing else you add another source of fuel, causing the competitors to at least lower prices, because as pointed out many times it is a free market.

 

2. Cause a price gas war between the big three, granted it would take alot of communication between the citizens of the US, but, if everyone started to buy just Shell gas for two weeks, the other companies would lower down their price, to get us back, then we go to Exxon for two weeks, thus causing Shell to lower prices, then we go back to Shell, causing Exxon to lower prices once more to get us back, and we keep going back and forth, until we reach prices that are more acceptable.

Not sure about Number 1 although I hate to see us deplete our reserves, but Number 2 will not work. (I have received that email several times too.)

You are right.:thumb: We need to first cut the size of the government drastically.

If people understand that a vote to increase corporate taxes is also an indirect tax upon themselves, then they will deserve what they get. Judging by the number of people who are simultaneously whining about high gas prices while jumping on the "punish big oil with big taxes" bandwagon, many people are clueless about who pays taxes.

 

Obama, Clinton, and McCain will all bring change but the changes that they are proposing will not have the effect on the economy that their supporters expect. Expect the "misery index" to be dusted off in the next few months as inflation and unemployment begin to climb, with interest rates not far behind.
