Ingrown Toenail

Anyone ever had one? I got a real bad one, doctor was supposed to cut it out today but said the infection was too bad. I was just wondering if anyone had one or if they went to the doctor to get one cut out? I hate needles:cry:

Will tell you I worked for a physician that removed them in the office. The worst is the numbing medicine, once that is in should go smoothly, just make sure not to watch!! Good Luck.

I hear ya, that was a rough St. Patty's day night at Mulligans down in CVG back in 1993. I think I drank them out of Jameson after that shot.

Go to Walgreens or wherever and get some stuff called OUTGRO, works great!

My son had them alot. We would go to the family Doc. to have them cut out and they were painful. It got to the point that when he would get them he wouldn't tell me because he was affraid to have them worked on due to the pain. Finally he ended up with one so bad he could hardly walk. It took persuasion but I got him to a pediatrist in Fort Thomas that was absolutely wonderful. No pain, and since he has worked on it my son has never had another one. Make sure you get to a good Dr. that knows what he is doing. An infection gone bad can be big problems. Actually if you have an infection now you should probably be on antibiotics now.

They're rough stuff. The numbing part is the worst, and unfortunately it's with needles. They inject the needle and then rotate it around, after a while you're numb and they take a tiny pair of medical scissors, grip onto the nail, and rip. I've also had them take scissors and just cut about a quarter or the nail out and letting it regrow. It's not very painful after the numbing.

I had one so bad that had gone in on both sides of my toe that they had to put me into surgery to fix it. They then killed the parts of the nail so it wouldn't grow back in there. Unfortunately they didn't kill it properly and it came back in, AGAIN on both sides ingrown from the beginning because the skin had moved in on the remaining nail. They got it right the second time. Needless to say I was cautious with those after that.

 

I was around 12 when al that happened.

Hey Grizz, I don't know about having one removed, I luckily have never had one. I will say though that your avatar may have been the cause of it..."Laettner - a dirty infection". Sound logical to me.

 

J/K - I hope that you can get it taken care of, I have heard from many people that those things are painful. Good Luck. :thumb:

I had the same procedure a couple of years ago but it seems to have worked out for me. It sucked for a while because I couldnt play ball or anything but I'm so glad I had it done. I had one ingrown when I was younger and had one really bad at the time and was starting to get another on the other foot at the same time. He said it was a hereditary thing that I had and we needed to burn the nerves so it wouldnt grow back on the sides. I'm very glad I went to the podiatrist instead of my family doctor or I'd probably have another one by now.

I had some pretty bad ingrown toenails as a child. Finally, after a few basketball seasons worth of pain (don't let people step on your toes, it's terrible) I had them removed. Now, I only have 1 of the 4 sides to my 2 bigtoe toenails. I haven't had any problems since then.

 

At the time I went in, the doctor told me that I had some of the worst ingrown toenails he had ever seen. I remember taking off my socks and having my toe stick to the sock. The puss from my toenail had practically glued my toe to the sock. It was disgusting, and smelled horribly. If you think having somebody step on your foot is painful, imagine playing basketball and having somebody step or jump on you. Ouch.

 

I remember the procedure being fairly simple. They'll inject you with some type of numbing medication in your foot / toe. That is the worst part, but also the best. After they do that, they'll give it some time to numb your toe. Once it's numb, they'll begin the procedure and then clean out the toe.

 

My doctor (podiatrist...or whatever the foot doctor is called) put the medication on and told me that there was a 99% chance that it would prevent the toenail from regrowing. Now my toenail has no left or right to it, and simply grows straight out. It's a little different, but not very noticeable. And, it prevents me from ever getting another ingrown toenail!

 

I would recommend getting them removed and getting the procedure that prevents the nail from growing again. It's definitely worth it, and you'll be pain free from there on out.

I have had both sides of both big toes, I'm an old pro at it, go ahead and count on taking it easy for a few days. I hate needles as well but they spray that freezing stuff on it that numbs it and you cant even feel the shot (worse shot I ever got was in my eye). They will put some type of acid in there that will kill it at the root, I have never had one come back since!

Hope this avatar is better:lol: On another note I am heading to the foot doctor Friday and I hope it goes well, the nurse told me today that the needle is about 10 inches and it hurts bad:cry: but hopefully after that I'm good.
