Give me a break on the trying to expand the game crap. If people from other countries want to play with the best of the best they can come here on play. It's also a travesty that the Reds don't open up the season anymore.

It was tradition for decades that the Reds played the first game of the season to honor the franchise as the first in MLB history...

I'm not a Reds fan, therefore it does not bother me at all. I'm sure most Reds fans will agree with you, however a lot of baseball fans probably do not care.

I know that Cincy hasn't had opening day for a while now. When did it change, and what was the rationale (if any)?

I could be off, but I think it changed in the late 90s when ESPN started doing a game on Sunday night. The first year it was the Reds, and I believe that was the last time the Reds kicked off the season...

The Reds were the traditional Opening Game from 1876-1989 with only two times in that span where they opened on the road (both times due to weather). However, in 1989 they were scheduled to open on the road in Houston. Since then, even when all teams opened on Monday they haven't always been the first game to start. As for ESPN, I think they started their Sunday night opener in 1994 when Karl "Tuffy" Rhodes hit 3 homeruns on opening night.

I wasn't sure about the Sunday night game--I just remembered a bunch of us getting together to do a Fantasy Draft and watch Rhodes hit the 3 Homeruns, it must have been a Monday Night game. I do know that somewhere in the 1980's the Reds stopped being the first game to start. I remember Dwight Evans hitting the first pitch of the entire Major League season for a home run in Tiger Stadium in 1986--that year the Sox-Tigers were the first game to start.

It was a day game. Rhodes hit three homers off Dwight Gooden and the Cubs still lost the game 12-8. Wind was howling out to left field that day.
