No, you are off. Gametime was mostly correct. The Reds were never scheduled to open on the road. The Reds did have to open on the road in 1990 when the season started late because of an owners lockout, and the start of the season was pushed back a couple of weeks. They just picked up the schedule from that date forward, but the Reds would have opened the season at home if the season had started on time. The Reds also were the 1st team to play the Sunday night game on ESPN. Marge Schott complained the whole time about it, and the Reds still had the Findlay Market Parade the next day on Monday as they usually do. Marge still considered that Monday game was the Opening Day, and had all the festivities on that Monday.

 

I think Marge complained because that was also Easter Sunday. That was the reason that the festivities were held the following day.

I got to watch most of the game. I was rooting for the A's. And I don't mind the fact that the game was played in Japan.

 

I miss getting to watch the Reds open the season up with the first game. But, things change, and sometimes not for the better.

When I was a kid my grandfather took me to many opening days at Crosley Field and as I got older opening day was special and I would always go. Now it doesn't matter to the big leagues. However, I do take off a 1/2 day and go to my favorite watering hole with some friends to watch the festivities and the game. It is still tradition to me that they were the first MLB team and on days that it is nice I would attend the parade. JD

Who else thinks this dog and pony show Selig is running is a joke. Open up the season on a Tuesday morning at 6 A.M. Give me a break on the trying to expand the game crap. If people from other countries want to play with the best of the best they can come here on play. It's also a travesty that the Reds don't open up the season anymore.

I couldn't had said it better myself. Opening day to me is an always will be the opening game in Cincy! MLB commish and teams front office's are a joke, they preach about "intergrity" and "TRADITIONS" of the game and then they go and open a season on foriegn soil :fight:. What is tradiotional about opening a season of the "American" game in Japan? :madman:.

 

I am with you HT, I didn't watch the so called season opener, even on replay - was not going to waste space on my recorder for it and will not watch the 2nd game.

It was tradition for decades that the Reds played the first game of the season to honor the franchise as the first in MLB history...

I don't know if it's a travesty that the Reds don't open up the season anymore...they're not exactly the best team...or even good for that matter.

It's tradition, and it's very sad indeed that it was not maintained.

 

I'm not a Reds fan, therefore it does not bother me at all. I'm sure most Reds fans will agree with you, however a lot of baseball fans probably do not care.

This Monday, I'll be attending my very first (I think) Findlay Market Parade! Been to Opening Day a few times, but not to this. Looking forward to it...and hoping it doesn't rain on our parade!
