I talked to a friend of mine yesterday tht had told me about him and buddy fishing the Greenup Pool of the Ohio River. He said that he had small bass on and was bringing it in when the fish started acting way more "wild" than usual as far as constanly jumping. They noticed a huge swirl behind the hooked bass, the other guy threw a topwater bait in behind the hooked fish and the water exploded! Result.....a 44" Musky!

I had an awesome night last night catching hybrid stripers on Herrington Lake. I have some good pics, but they are too large to post on the thread. We came home with one that was 28" long and a flat head that was about 30". I cleaned fish for about 1 1/2 hours today and have a freezer full now!

The family and I went to a farm pond outside Madison, IN this past weekend and caught 2 stringers full in about 3 hrs. My son(age 9) must have found a honey hole because he slayed 12 Large mouth. Seven of those were keepers and each of those went for 12 in. plus and anywhere from 1lb to 2 lbs. I myself hit the pot on some nice bluegill and red ear. I ended up catching 11 with 2 weighing in at 13ozs and 4 weighing at least 11ozs. To say the least we had a great time. My daughter caught 1 fish all day and it was a 14 in large mouth and weighed 1 1/2 lbs( she is 5). HA HA the wifey got skunked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A coworker just came back from the upper penensula. He had pictures of a big trout, a huge steelhead, and a surprise big chinook. The chinooks are very rare this time of the year. Maybe it was lost. He likes to fly fish.

Just got back from a couple of days at Cave Run Lake. I normally fish the tailwaters area for crappie. They were releasing large volumes of water from the lake. Needless to say the fishing wasn't very good. I also did not get to try any fish eggs for dinner.

The Ohio River, tributaries, backwaters and sloughs continue to be unbelievable fishing. Fish are being caught on plastics (worms, lizards), spinnerbaits (just about any type), shallow cranks and by flipping and or pitching.

 

All of this week has been excellent with several limits, double limits being caught. Yesterday (Thursday) I talked to a friend that had boated around 20 keepers and said his best 5 would have been around a 15lb. limit with a 4 1/2 lb. kicker, !5lb. limits on the Greenup Pool of the Ohio are very good and will win or cetainly place high in most tournaments on this pool. Some 14"-15" crappie are being taken as well.

 

Ramblur, have you ever been to Dale Hollow Lake. I'm trying to get a buddy of mine to go with me down there this summer. It's supposed to be small mouth paradise. What are good baits for small mouth?

For future reference, you can call (606) 783-7001 before heading to Cave Run and a recording will tell you all the lake info for the day, including outflow below the dam.

 

The best fishing is between 350-600 cubic feet per second. I prefer around 450-500. :thumb:

Yes I have been to Dale Hollow but it has been years. I would advise for you to check with someone that has been there more recent. I have heard that there are weeds in the lake now that were not prevalent in the past. Yes, Dale is a smallmouth haven. The size and creel limit on the lake for them have exploded the poulation which was already unbelievable. Check the regulations before you go, there is slot limit on smallmouth there that is unlike any other slot that I have heard of.

As for differet baits, methods that would depend on the time of the year. A lot of smallmouth are caught at night in the summer on big (single colorado blade) spinnerbaits. Again, try to check with someone that has been there more recent.

If you do find high water, go to the fish hatchery and drive to the other side of the spillway. Go to the spot where the little creek runs into the spillway water and fish around those trees. You'll catch more crappie than you can imagine.:thumb:

Yeah, I saw several people on that side fishing. I have a brother in law who works at the hatcherie. I'll have to talk to him.
