Got up early Sunday morning and took the boys out on the river. The fish were chasing bait everywhere. We were throwing top water, spinner baits, crank baits, and rubber worms, without a bite. We noticed the bait the fish were feeding on were only about a 3/4 of an inch to an inch long. So we down-sized our baits to 1/8 ounce white rooster tail and white beetle spins. We managed to catch four keepers, several short fish, and seven or eight white bass. Fishing is slow but if you down-size your presentation you can scratch out a few fish.

 

:thumb: A white rooster tail or beetle spin can never go wrong on the river. Also, you probably have but if you haven't already try an 1/8 oz. buzzbait .

Just got done putting a bag of Hybrid filets in the freezer from the Ohio River area below the Greenup Dam. The fish were caught by using a very long rod with a 1 to 1/2oz. weighted floater/popper with either a live shad (approx. 5" in length) or Zoom Fluke type bait behind it and working the bait in short jerks/popping the float. Very long cast of approx. 50 to 75 yards are being made to the area just below the Greenup Dam, throwing the baits long distances to the breaks/eddy's in the current.

This past week found the bass fishing still fairly good on the Ohio River...Greenup pool. Some fish still being caught in the Little Sandy river/tributarie on the mud flats although for the most part they were non keepers. When cloudy weather the fish are chasing baitfish more and can be caught on a variety of baits. When the sun comes out bright and hot, the bass tend to lock in very close to cover.

I just got off the phone with a good friend of mine that has been fishing the Greenup pool on the Ohio several times this past week. Yesterday was his best day by far in a long time on the river for numbers. He informed me that things were slow on the main river so him and his partner went up one of the tributaries in the back end of a creek and the bass were gorging on shad. They (bass) had the shad pinned up against the back end and were just schooling on them.

With a spinnerbait and a rat-l-trap types bait in shad colors the two of them caught 50-75 bass, just about every cast or every other one produced a fish. They went back today and caught a few, nothing like yesterday.

 

Even though I was not there I just thought that I would share this story, a day like that on the Greenup pool is very rare to say the least. I will also say that this guy was not exaggerating, he is top notch fisherman and has placed very well in several tournaments through the years on the Ohio along with other lakes in our region and state wide.

Talked to a couple of friends this evening that had been fishing the Ohio river 4 days this week. Good catches of largemouth were still coming in by fishing some main river weed either with a crankbait or Buzzbait. Some places with thicker (surface)weeds a plastic frog was also used with sucsess. As always on the river there are still resident fish in the creeks and backwaters that can be caught in a variety of methods depending on the water and weather conditions.....worm (4"ringworm), jig (blk/blue), crankbait (shad or craw) and the old reliable spinnerbait in a wht/chart..

I have also heard of some musky being caught from the Little Sandy River.

Has been a while since any updates on this thread. I talked with a buddy of mine that had fished the Ohio River (Greenup Pool) yesterday. A typical early fall pattern on the river is fishing the mouth's of feeder creeks, tributaries and backwaters. This year is certainly no different than any other. Bass were caught a almost every stop when he first started a check of this pattern after not doing any good fishing other areas for part of the morning.

 

Bass were caught at every stop he made on the main river at the mouths of the tributaries, creeks and backwaters. His largest fish was around 3 1/2 lb. and caught several (some at each stop) throwing a small, shad colored crankbait on the points at the mouth of these tributaries.

 

Don't hang the rods and reels up yet, everyone is deer hunting and the lakes and rivers are less crowded and the fall is one of the very best times to fish. I haven't heard anything but the Musky should be doing good at Cave Run, October is usually a very good month. Bass should be very good as well just about everywhere.

This time of year one pattern that usually pans out is that they will have the shad pushed to the backs of the creeks & coves just gorging on them.

Small cranks, spinnerbaits.....a variety of lures will work during this time.

 

Also, mid November on through the winter is a good time to load up the freezer with some sauger to go along with the venison from deer season . Sauger fishing really turns it up below the locks and dams on the Ohio River.

Well I spent all last week at Cave Run camping at Twin Knobs. Did a little huntin' a little hikin', a little mtn bikin' and some fishin'. I caught 3 nice cats in the tailwaters. All in the 20" to 23" range on minnows. Also several nice bluegills in the lake.

Yes, that is the weekend we're going down....It's going to be interesting, 11 guys no females for an entire weekend....Not sure we'll survive. :lol:
