Is Cosby right or is Wright right?

Featured Replies

So white men have a conspiracy to keep everyone else down. You are a white man. Do you take part in this conspiracy?

Cosby is right. Pointing out statistics just feeds the problem. Even though there may be a "disadvantage", it can be overcome if you stop blaming everyone else. No matter what the color of your skin (or gender), no one fires a hard worker.

I have already responded to a post similar to this. I'm not accusing every white man of being involved in a conspiracy. I have never done that.

So you are saying that even though they may be disadvantaged they should just overcome those disadvantages? Are you suggesting that if they don't overcome those disadvantages, it's their own fault?

Of course many white people (men mainly) do not want things to be equal, because they're so used to being the advantaged.

Point taken. But what I meant was that I'm not sure it's possible to ever have a situation where one group of people (race/sex/religion, etc.) aren't more privileged than another.

I agree, but that doesn't mean we should just ignore the disadvantages that some people face.

Cosby is right and Wright is wrong. The people who buy into Wright's message are dooming themselves to failure. Cosby's message is tough, but it is truly a message of hope and offers a path to real change for the better.

Just posing a question here. If that is what you beleive to be the case, then wouldn't it make sense for the historically more priviledged groups to prevent the historically under-priviledged groups from advancing and possibly replacing them at the top?

I agree that things have changed, but there are still many advantages for white people today.

Some easy examples, one being that many white men are paid more than white women, and minorities, for doing the same jobs.

Another example I've already posted in another thread (maybe in this one) being that many minorities are arrested at higher rates even though whites commit just as many crimes.

Those are two examples of advantages that whites have over minorities today.

The money gap between women and me decreased quite a bit until last year I believed when it widened again slightly. Attached is a link to a GAO report that discusses reasons why, at least in the eyes of the GAO, for the gap: http://usgovinfo.about.com/cs/censusstatistic/a/womenspay.htm.

The listed ones are: women work fewer hours and have breaks in work careers(probably because of family responsibilities); men with children earn approx 2.5% more than women with children (which has to be directly related to the first reason I would think); and women have less work experience. All of which are legitimate reasons in my mind for an employer to pay a woman less.

I think with the ever more competitive economic arena that American businesses find themselves today, I see a mentality of business managers who reward those employees that bring the most to the bottom line, regardless of whether that employee is white or black; female or male; handicapped or non-handicapped. I will agree that was not always the case, but from my observations into the corporate world today (which is a dang good one considering what I do for a living) its not much the case any more.

Which white men are part of the conspiracy? Evil Corporations?

If those disadvantages are so powerful and prevalent, then how come some black men, Hispanics, women, etc. can overcome it. Does the white conspiracy allow some people to succeed to cover up that there is a conspiracy or what? All I am saying is that bringing up this issue again and again allows people to blame others.

I am sure that you have read into the philosophy of someone like Kierkegaard or even Nietzsche. You are an authentic success or authentic failure. There are no excuses.

I don't believe it's anyone specific group of people that have joined together to form a conspiracy.

Some people make it out and you think that means there are not disadvantages? Because SOME make it? Blaming others is better than blaming the victims. It's not their fault they are disadvantaged.

The philosophy of you are a success or failure would be fine if all things were equal. They are not in America.

Would you agree that there are advantages for blacks and women?

There are. And for poor people too. Think college admissions; think women and minority business set asides; think govt welfare programs.

Isn't that usually what happens? Without assistance from an outside source, it's been very rare in world history for an underprivileged group to rise up and overthrow their chains.

Never said you shouldn't post, but just that your insight into certain matters isn't quite as relevent. In the prior thread to which you referred on parenting, you expounded in great length on your opinion and knowledge in raising and disciplining a child. Sorry, but you should at least have walked that road before offering up such sage and worldly advice.

Just like how those of us that have not walked in a black man's (or woman's) shoes cannot really offer up sage and wordly advice on what it is like to live their life? :sssh:

Indeed. Used to be called "affirmative action", but of course that phrase is a "no-no" anymore. But regardless of what it is called, it absolutely exists. This, despite the fact that "many of the programs set up by the government do little to help poor and disadvantaged people." Or so says one expect on the topic.

I don't recall doing so. I recall saying that I agreed with Cosby's assessment of what ails his race and that I disagree that I am personally part of any group holding back the progress of other individuals.

Those advantages are set up for a reason, you know that. Without them minorities and women would be more disadvantaged than they are today.

While welfare programs help them survive, they do not help the poor escape poverty. And I believe you can only be on welfare for a limited period of time.

Interesting. I'm well aware of the imprisonment statistics and disparities that exist. But tell me, how is it that you've deduced that "whites commit just as many crimes" as many other minorities?
