March 21, 200818 yr "Black Pride" is a good thing because of the generations of self-hate that were engrained into the Black community. The self-hate is the reason, I feel, for alot of the problems that we see. The Black community needs to LEARN to love its self, then to appreciate themselves as a productive member of American society. Wright was abrasive in the way he delivered his message. But I think he has noble intentions at the core. His message has just been corrupted a bit in it's delivery. Self-hate? The core of the problem for the black community is self-hatred??? Not fatherless families? Not a high crime rate? Not a lack of education? Not a reliance on government entitlement programs? But because they don't love themselves enough? Sorry, I just don't follow that one at all. Their problems would appear to have everything to do with exactly what Mr. Cosby so eloquently stated. And these problems are difficult to overcome when the more publicly seen "spokesmen" for the black community are people like Jessie Jackson, Louis Farakhan, Al Sharpton, and others, who place the blame on everyone but their own race and preach everything but personal responsibility.

March 21, 200818 yr Going back to the original article, I am not sure that Mr. Crosby and Rev. Wright are on opposite sides of the argument. Crosby never said that whites were the friends or allies of black - as a matter of fact, he stated that he didn't care what a white man thought of him. Additionally, we don't know what might have been in an of Rev. Wright's sermons over the 20 years. Is there a chance that he ever said anything similar?

I've already told you that whites commit just as many crimes as blacks. Blacks are simply arrested more. The lack of education is who's fault? Have you been to their schools? Are their schools worth anything? I'd say many inner city schools are poor. Without affirmative action, women and blacks would suffer from far more problems than they do at this point in time.

So where are the statistics to support your claim? Applying some basic logic here, it stands to reason that crime should be worse in predominately white neighborhoods than in mostly black neighborhoods. Also, the fact that whites are not arrested as often despite committing crimes just as often as blacks should mean that the unsolved crime rate in white suburbs should be far higher than, say, in Watts or Newark, New Jersey. Where are these mainly white, affluent neighborhoods plagued with unsolved murders, rapes, and random acts of violence? Where are the crime infested white neighborhoods where policemen refuse to arrest criminals because of their race?

This could include rape, or many other "victimless" crimes. Drug sales and drug trafficking crimes that aren't caught are usually not reported either as far as I know. As for the statistics, I'm finding some things now, I'll post them shortly.

Good luck, but I believe that you have misinterpreted some statistics or over generalized the results. There is no way that middle and upper class white (or black) males commit serious crimes at the same frequency as poor black men.
March 22, 200818 yr Good luck, but I believe that you have misinterpreted some statistics or over generalized the results. There is no way that middle and upper class white (or black) males commit serious crimes at the same frequency as poor black men. In this one sentence, all the weight of white America's racial anxiety and hostility was poured out into my web browser, the implication being that there was no racism in the justice system, but rather, that the position of African Americans within that system was merely a function of disproportionate criminality. If blacks would just straighten up, everything would be fine... Would that the evidence supported such optimism. Fact is, from the earliest stages of policing to the point of being jailed, evidence of racial bias is clear and overwhelming... According to a Justice Department report from February 2001, police are more than twice as likely to search vehicles driven by blacks after pulling them over, even though whites, when searched, are more than twice as likely to be in possession of illegal items, such as narcotics.... In New York City, stop-and-frisk searches by police highlight the unfair treatment to which people of color are subjected. Even after controlling for differential crime rates and the population demographics of a given neighborhood, black and Latino residents of New York are far more likely to be stopped by police than whites. In mostly white parts of town, blacks are 2.25 times more likely to be stopped and searched on suspicion of weapons possession and three times more likely on suspicion of having committed a violent crime, relative to their arrest rates for those crimes. In other words, the fact that blacks have higher rates of offending in those categories does not explain the higher stoppage rates. The above-mentioned disproportions reflect the level of unequal treatment that remains after factoring in all the non-racial reasons that could explain searches. LINK
March 22, 200818 yr Good luck, but I believe that you have misinterpreted some statistics or over generalized the results. There is no way that middle and upper class white (or black) males commit serious crimes at the same frequency as poor black men. Who said it had to be middle or upper class? Are we supposed to exclude the poor whites/blacks from this discussion?
March 22, 200818 yr Who said it had to be middle or upper class? Are we supposed to exclude the poor whites/blacks from this discussion? You said that whites are at least as likely as blacks to commit serious crimes. I believe that most of us would agree that there is a link between poverty and crime and that blacks are more likely to be poor than whites. If you accept those facts, then it stands to reason that whites are less likely than blacks to commit serious crimes. Any gap between two races would narrow or disappear if one takes into account income levels. Therefore, it is an over generalization to conclude that whites are as likely to commit crimes as blacks when there is no data to support your assertion. I do not believe that one's race makes one more or less likely to commit crime but I do believe that one's income level and its influence on the local culture does impact the likelihood of a person to commit crimes.l As for the link that you provided, it is an opinion piece that lacks citations to the studies that it purports to be supportive of the author's conclusions. The author seems to have a specific political agenda and I have no idea how well the data supports his opinions. As for how this relates to the topic, I believe that Rev. Wright's message is that black people in this country are oppressed and white people deserve whatever punishment comes their way, including 9/11. OTOH, Cosby's message is that blacks have the power to lift themselves from poverty with hard work and perseverance and that blaming an entire race for one's circumstance in life is self-destructive Bill Cosby understands that he lives in a great country that provides all of its citizens with great opportunities if they are willing to work for them. Jeremiah Wright believes that he lives in a racist country and that the current generation of white people need to be punished for the sins committed by their distant ancestors.

March 22, 200818 yr Blacks may be more likely to be poor, but there are more poor white people in the U.S. than blacks, therefore we can compare statistics between whites and blacks. Regardless, percentage wise, blacks are arrested more for drug related crimes when statistics (that I've shown, even though you may disagree with the source), show that whites use illegal drugs as much as blacks.
March 22, 200818 yr # According to the federal Household Survey, "most current illicit drug users are white. There were an estimated 9.9 million whites (72 percent of all users), 2.0 million blacks (15 percent), and 1.4 million Hispanics (10 percent) who were current illicit drug users in 1998." And yet, blacks constitute 36.8% of those arrested for drug violations, over 42% of those in federal prisons for drug violations. African-Americans comprise almost 58% of those in state prisons for drug felonies; Hispanics account for 20.7%. March 22, 200818 yr Among persons convicted of drug felonies in state courts, whites were less likely than African-Americans to be sent to prison. Thirty-three percent (33%) of convicted white defendants received a prison sentence, while 51% of African-American defendants received prison sentences. It should also be noted that Hispanic felons are included in both demographic groups rather than being tracked separately so no separate statistic is available. March 22, 200818 yr # Regardless of similar or equal levels of illicit drug use during pregnancy, black women are 10 times more likely than white women to be reported to child welfare agencies for prenatal drug use.
