I've watched every game on TV and been to Lex to a game and didn't even know he was on the team. I would rather be in a smaller school playing than on the bench at Ky anyway.

I am not going to read the 5 page discussion that is already going on OVER A WALK ON, so I will just state my opinion. I dont see how this is a big deal at all, honestly. The kid was a walk on and sounds like he deserved it. Billy has got the likes of Ramel and Joe to buy into his system on the basketball court, could this walk on not buy into showing a little respect for a teammate? I would be embarrased if I was caught laughing on the bench during a blowout loss. Apparently this kid doesn't really care too much about the team anyways.

Of course though, it looks like some will bash Billy over something so marginal when they dont even know the opposing side of the story. It would be dumb on BG's part to come out and talk about this. It would only be a distraction that this team does not need.

This whole deal has to be aggravating to all the guys that tried out for the team at the walk-on tryout that were ALOT BETTER THAN HIM and didnt make it. I play in a league with one of those guys and will see him tonight. He'll probably go off for about 40 tonight....

Many on here obviously feel a lot of bling support for Gilispie. You've automatically surmised that he was justified in demeaning this young man. you have Dusty's account of the incident and even though Clyde hasn't seen fit to demean himself by speaking of the incident to the peons, you still take his side. Excuse me but this is the same garbage we heard from Bobby Knight fans for years. As far as the statements that it's Ok since he was "just a walk-on", I guess the golden rule has no place in coaching

First, I'm blown away. 5 pages in about 6 hours over a walkon? Impressive. Kudos, gentlemen.

 

Secondly, BCG can run this team as he sees fit. No one has ever said anything glowing about Dusty Mills so this could have been a long time coming. I'm sure he wasn't a first time offender. And why are we getting stirred up because a coach cussed at his player? I know I was cussed almost daily in high school. This is no big thing.

 

Thirdly, I think it says a lot about the kids character (and I might mean maturity) when he goes to the media and uses phrases like "he was on a total power trip", "he went berserk", "at one point, I was moved to tears" . Just seems like a pretty immature kid to me.

Is it shocking to use that coaches use profanity and berate players? Like I said, it happened to me almost daily in high school practices (I was a slow learner ), so I could only imagine how intense a D1 practice could be.

 

Plus let's remember he is just a walk-on. Not that he's any less a part of the team or matters less as a human, but he has much less room for error. If he's been jerking around for a while, this could have been the straw the broke the camel's back.

What I'm wondering is how many readers around the state today said the following after reading the article:

 

"Hmm. I didn't know there was a kid named Dusty Mills on the team."

Laughing for a guy tripping on his way back to his seat is NOT grounds for dismissal from a team. And again, why wait until after the Vandy game? Was BCG's arrogant pride hurt so much he had to take it out on a walk-on? It's obvious BCG has some issues with how he handles his players, and this is a perfect example.

 

Now tell me this Deuce, how do you know that this was the only reason he was dismissed from the team? You've heard one side of the story, I think the smart thing to do would be to wait till we hear further details. Or, jump the gun like you already have.

This is pretty silly. It gives Deuce and some of the others something to get worked up about and criticize Gillispie over. The kid couldn't play, and when you have someone goofing off and being "squirrely" all the time as his coach said, theres probably a good reason to get rid of him. If a wakon is a problem at all on the bench or in practice, it is best to get rid of that walkon.

Nope. It was on a three way cal he didn't know he was on.

First off, a coach doesn't have to curse to get his point across. I have never heard my high school coach curse one time. Any curse words was an automatic 25 push ups. But Coach got his point across just fine without them. But I understand that it's part of some people's vocabulary (mine included) and I don't see the big deal.

 

OR, I agree with Deuce, there isn't a reason to bring Sampson into this (besides the fun factor involved). The thread is about BCG and how he handles his team and Mills in particular. I agree with what others have said, what Mills H.S. coach said is the most telling piece of the whole article. I think there have probably been several instances of goofing off and horsing around that have lead to the dismissal and this was just the nail in the coffin. This isn't H.S. anymore, Mills is playing with the big boys and it doesn't sound like he had the maturity to handle it. BCG maybe could have handled it better, but he is trying to establish control of a new team and Mills should've walked the line. Mills didn't and he got the punishment that went along with it. To me it sounds like Mills is looking for sympathy and he isn't getting it here. I think BCG is being the bigger man and not getting into a back and forth of "he said".

 

I forgot who brought it up earlier, but I can't really remember a time when a dismissal was so public, it's usually "dismissed for violating team policy" or something to that effect. I think Mills bringing this to the press furthers my belief that he lacks the maturity to handle the big leagues.

When something bad happens between 2 people, the person that got the worst of it always over exagerates it. Gillispie probably closed the door, and probably did not say that he did not care about him because that is just insinsitive. Gillispie probably did yell and scream at him for something that he should have not been doing, laughing while a teammate was laying on the floor in obvious pain. In my mind, he certainly did exagerate it to blow it way out of proportion. When people are telling their side of a story to protect themselves they always try to make themselves out to be almost completely innocent. I believe that Gillispie was probably a little too harsh, but this guy makes him out to be a monster. The entire story was true mostly, but way over exagerated I think.
