Jim...the check engine light will stay on if you do not turn your gas cap at least two whole turns after you put gas in.....If you do, it should go off (the light)! To make sure, we turn our six half turns which is three whole turns.....

That's not what caused it. I had that happen within the first two weeks I had the car, not knowing I couldn't fill it up while the engine was running (the way I had been able to with each and every car I owned before that).

The same exact problem happened to my brother's VW (mine is a VW as well) and I took it in and had it fixed while he was in Iraq. It took them $700 worth of labor and parts to tell me some sensor had burned out. The light went out, but there was no change in performance for the better. As a result, I let mine go, as I knew the problems were exactly the same, and have had no engine troubles for those three years.

Oh yeah. It started just fine this morning, but I forgot to look to see if the engine light came back on.

Living near Lewisburg outside Maysville, they don't even deliver out here.

Needless to say, I miss the big city life.

Used to all the time. Having to take my weeks-old VW back to the dealership to have them figure out why the check engine light was on broke me of that habit. Never was an issue on any of the other cars I'd had before that. My dad always did it, so I guess that's where I picked it up.

Also, the light has stayed off. I'm still not sure what to make of it. It makes me think there is something wrong to not see that bright orange light in the center of the display panel. I've got a lot of traveling to do over the next couple weeks, and now would be a bad choice for my car to start acting up, forcing me to spend the money I was going to put toward tires on something else.

If I ever get to own a car that the Check Engine light doesn't stay on, or that doesn't leak or burn at least one of the fluids, I wouldn't know how to act!!

What was the point of leaving it running when filling up?

My old car was like that. The check engine light was on for years. It would go off every once in a while for a little bit, and that distracted me more than when the light was on.

My check engine light has been on for about 2 years now. I know how to fix it but I'm not willing to pay the 115 bucks when it's not causing any harm.
