3 point line for elementary age kids

Featured Replies

I don't get why a 3 point line is in use for kids under age 10 and/or still in elementary school. The majority of kids at this early age must use poor form to give the shot a chance. They either shoot it behind their ear or launch it from their waste. Unfortunately, because it's a 3 point shot, kids practice it using poor form. I understand how parents, players and coaches can fall in love with it, but how does it specifically benefit kids this young to have it in play during school games or AAU?

I can see no reason that the 3 point line is benificial to a player that young. As you said, most do not have the upper body strength to properly shoot such a shot. When I was in elementary school, none of the gyms even had a 3 point line. It should still be that way, IMO.

Simple: All made shots are 2 point shots even if its a full court shot.

It was that way for us in Junior Pro, 81. We played on a 9 foot goal and there were no 3 pointers. I dont know if they still do it like that, but I think it was beneficial when we did it.

My son's ABA team (3rd/4th grade) does not recognize the 3 point line. All shots from the field are 2s.

The 3 point line only has the potential to benefit the coaches and the team win/loss percentage. It does nothing for a player that young. For that matter, I think you could make strong case for zone defense at that young of an age. I've seen a lot of youth basketball and have to say most don't know proper man to man defensive technique. I doubt a high school or college scout evaluating a player has commented that, "he's not that good at man to man but can sure play a mean zone". Kids need to learn proper techniques early on. Unfortunately, the best thing and the worst thing about AAU is its competitiveness. Coaches know zones are effective and get lost in trying to win at all costs instead of teaching kids proper fundamentals.

When I have coached kids that young we do not even DISCUSS the 3 point line. I strongly discourage any of them from shooting the three. Because the league we played in allowed them we one time tried to make one because we were down 3 points with a few seconds left. That is the only reason though!

My daughter who will be 25 this year was consistantly hitting 3 point shot when she was a 4th grader and continued on through grade school and there was no problem with her form , the only problem was that when she entered High School she chose volleyball instead of basketball . Disliked the jv coach .

College players don't "consistantly" hit 3 point shots.

That is a shame to have had a player who could consistantly hits threes decide to play volleyball. I really have a hard time believing that to be honest because it is proven that girls for the most part are much weaker than boys. Hard for me to imagine that a 4th grade girl could consistantly hit threes, let alone get it to the rim properly every time she shot. If she could do it like that then she must have been an amazing player! How someone who could shoot that good could pick volleyball is beyond me!

The only thing I can think of is maybe she was an early bloomer, which isn't too much of a stretch in 4th grade. I figure that a player is ready to step outside by middle school which is just around the corner from 4th grade. But as a whole I agree with you on this subject.

I am not saying it isn't possible. However, that would not be the norm at all for that age kid and especially in a young lady. I coached girls basketball for 5 seasons so I do not mean any slight to girls at all. I was thinking maybe 6th grade might be a good starting point!

I went to Pitino's father son camp the first year he had it at UK. One of the fathers basically asked him about his young son shooting threes and his comment was if he can do it with proper form fine, but he stressed basketballs and goal heights should be adjusted so proper form could be practiced at all times.

I like it.

It is funny watching kids shoot around before or during halftime of a high school game. They get the rebound and immediatley to the 3 point line. Watch the next time you are at a game.

When I coached youth basketball it was before the three point line so it wasn't a question then. I will say that a three point line for youth basketball imo is absurd! Kids should be learning the basic fundamentals of basketball like ball handling, passing, rebounding, defense and shooting/shooting form.

I think that teaching shooting form is critical and a small elementary kid would have to "push" or "heave" the ball to try and shoot from a "3" distance. Imo this would completely go against any pure shooting form/technique that he is learning. I don't care how far they put a 3 pt. line for younger kids either.

At a young/elementary age imo they should learn basic fundamentals and not worry about "shoot the trey baby!!:D".

JMO and any coach I would think would agree with this - teach fundamentals;). There will certainly be enough time for the three point shot in later years in the kids development as a basketball player.

Plus, when they get older hopefully they will learn and come to realize that.......................................

"the three point shot and dunks put butts in the seats.......defense wins games......defense Plus rebonding wins championships".
