Mad. Southern Interviews

Featured Replies

Dave Brumley would be the best choice. He played and COACHED on sme really great teams at Boone Co. Ran the "O" at Scott High when they made and won a game in the playoffs a few years ago, and knows the kids very well at Madison Southern. Also, he has got almost 20 kids from Southern who didn't play last year to come out from day one during the winter program. I know that there are some very qualified people who have applied, but why on Earth wouldn't you hire a guy who has already begun a building process at this school. He is young and has already shown he will put in the work...I want my son to play for this guy. He is knows the game and it's time for him to run a program.

I agree he is the best for the job he is a great guy and a great coach. The only thing is was when he was at Scott he didnt run the O. When they went to the playoffs and won the Head Coach called the plays. Dave had some input on it but the head man was the play caller.

Was Johnny Poynter from trimble Co interviewed?

Mark Scenters played at Madison Southern when the school first opened or short after. I think he coached there, and at Berea, until the 2000 season when he came to Madison Central to be on Paul Rains' staff. He has coached there since on Kenny Turner's staff. He has been offered jobs with other schools, but stayed due to his loyalty to his players and the school...and the Richmond/Berea area.

Coach Scenters has the drive, the personality, and the knowledge to help Southern become respectable again. If I were on the hiring committee, I wouldn't have waited this long to hire him. He has paid his dues.

I agree 100 %!

If believe the new coached will be picked by the 9th of February. I don't know when it will be announced thought.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I beg to differ. :sssh:

Former Madison Central assistants (98-01) who are now head coaches:

David Hensley, East Jessamine and Paul L. Dunbar

Jason Chappel, Perry Central and South Laurel

Mark Dixon, Hazard

Todd Harris, Berea and Jackson County

Kenny Turner, Madison Central

Todd Shipley, Shelby County

Well lets go through these coaches...All of them have been fairly successful, but none of them have ever really done a whole lot. Hensley should have gotten fired for losing as many games as he has, but he may be able to to get back with the talent he has. Chappel has yet to prove anything. Dixon I don't know much about, Todd Harris...well Berea and Jackson Co. should say enough there, he hasn't won at either place. Kenny Turner is the biggest underachiever. Scott, Clark, Lincoln, Boone, all have beat him with regularity, he has a few wins over the lesser schools in LEX, and Shipley has had moderate success. Point being, Southern has good teams every few years, but why in the world would we want mediocrity, Southern has the skill to win that district with Bell and Rock, but why would we want one more mediocre coach like Central has produced. Also Bear, playing good teams is great I'll give you that, but when you aren't competitive and get blown out is another.

"Fairly successful" is something Madison Southern needs to strive for, hopefully the new coach does better than the 44-53 record under Carter's watch. :thumb:

Boys you gotta have players, plain and simple!

Crum Jr.,

So do you feel Brumley is a better "player's coach" that will get those athletes out there?

Hey Bear you are right about Carter, but in his defense his last two years killed his record, but before that he was well over .500. and got them three playoff wins, before that Elkin was a consistant winner, he was always winning games and to this day lost what was probably the best playoff game this area has ever seen. Chuck Smith was even quoted a few years back saying that that was the most exciting playoff game he ever coached in. Boyle won that game with 30 seconds to go in the regional final. The "ELKIN" mentality is what Madison Southern has not had over the past 10 years. As tough as he was his players would have run through a wall for that guy.

Teddy Taylor killed Madison Southern. That guy had no clue...where's he at...oh yeah CENTRAL. He doesn't even show up for their meeting on Saturdays for coach Turner and that is a fact. All he does now is walk up and down sideline yelling like he knows what is going on. He was a great player, and was able to get coaching jobs on his name alone.

Anyway, "Fairly Successful" you can argue that...but its fair.

I think he will get players out. Southern doesnt have the type of kids right now to compete. When you lose a senior class like they did 2 years ago that hurts just like their basketball team who is really struggling, theyve lost some good talent lately.

In Berea you have 2 schools 1 mile apart in a town of 11K, with a very limited athletic base. Whoever gets it will have their work cut out for them!!!

I'd agree that they didn't have the right type of kids...but I see the fault was in the offense's scheme. That variation of the spread, looks great on paper, that can never be argued, but when you don't have the horses to pull it, why keep beating them into the ground with it. Whoever takes over, should definitely reevaluate their kids and find something that suites them better.

Good point, but I really don't think the spread will be Southern's main weapon with Brumley at the helm.

Well Slappy, you and CrumJr seem to know Brumley pretty well. What do you think he will run if he was at the helm. Or, for others, if you were at the helm, what system do you think would be the best for southern....it will be like our own mini interview question...

I really like this argument, given the fact that Mike Elkin was the head coach at Madison Central from 1982-1992 before he took over at Southern from 1993-1998:rolleyes:

I bet that someone who has not been mentioned on here gets this job.

Actually 96 was Elkin's last season there.
