I just can not vote for McCain. I don't like just about anything the man ever says. I don't trust him and I don't want him to be POTUS.

 

I have read up as much as I can and weighed the options.

 

Unless something major changes, in the general election, I will be casting my vote for Barack Obama. *

 

I will not vote for Hillary Clinton, should she win the nomination.

I am with you on not being able to vote for an unstable character like McCain but there is not way I can vote for a socialist either. I will be voting for a third party candidate or writing in a name. Once McCain locks up the nomination, I will not be trying to persuade anybody to vote for or against anybody.

 

From my perspective, it looks like one of three Democrats will be our next president, and I am including McCain in my assessment. McCain reminds me of Nixon, only he lacks Nixon's charm and good looks.:lol:

I didn't realize that McCain was touting himself as a full fledge conservative. Heck, I've heard him refer to himself as a moderate. He does have some positions that tend to be favored by conservatives (pro military, pro intelligence, generally pro low tax notwithstanding the no votes on Bush's tax cuts, pro business etc) but admittedly he's not with the conservatives on every issue. I guess that makes him a make believe conservative in your mind. Not me. It makes him a moderate with some conservative stances. Ironic to me is the clamoring we've heard on this site from a lot of people (perhaps not you HHSDad but a lot of others) that we want our elected officials to put aside extreme idealogical positions and work with the other side. Seems like McCain's detractors on here feel that it should only be the Democrats moving to the middle and the Republicans should stay hard and fast with the hard conservative stances. That would be nice, but it just isn't going to happen.

 

I'm curious to know why you think Obama is the paragon of honesty. You think he's been totally honest in re the funny real estate transaction involving the slum lord or whatever Hillary referred to him as? Me thinks Obama is not as pure as fresh snow on that one.

 

Right now its easy for Obama to appear to be a honest liberal as that's the audience he's playing to in the primary. If he wins the primary, once the general election gets underway, I think you'll see him all of a sudden massaging his message to attract the moderates. Will that no longer make him an honest liberal, but rather a make believe Democrat? I think so.

 

I hope come November you reconsider your thinking. While I'd prefer to have a full bottle of Woodford, I'll still take a half bottle of Woodford over a full bottle of Kentucky Tavern any day.

McCain has been claiming to be a conservative but not many of us are buying it. As I posted in another thread, McCain's ACU score in 2006 (last year of publicly available data) was good for a ranking of 47th among the 100 US Senators. Most, if not all of those ranked above him are Republicans and the Republicans ranked lower include Olympia Snow and Susan Collins.

It would depend on who McCain would pick as his VP for me....I can assure everyone I will never be casting a vote for Obama or Hillary.

Of course he's saying that: he has to try and appeal to the right wingers to win the primary. But you and I both know that McCain has not in the past tried to hide the fact that he has no problems supporting moderate positions and hasn't minded being called a moderate Republican. Obama and Hillary have a huge advantage so in that they don't have to appeal to the moderates in their party to get the primary nomination; quite the contrary, they need to appeal to the left wingers. Once the general campaign begins, you are going to see the Dem nomination in the uncomfortable position of trying to appeal to the moderate Democrats and independents. I only hope the left wingers on here give their nomination as much guff as the right wingers are giving McCain.

 

McCain by the way got an "A" rating from the National Taxpayers Union and received the Taxpayers Friend Award ( just so those of you that hear so much about him voting twice against Bush's tax cuts get the full picture about where McCain stands on keeping taxes low). I've made the point on here several times that McCain is the only R that has a chance of winning the WH. Listening to NPR this morning (good to know what the other side is thinking:D) I was not surprised that in a lot of states, a majority of R voters felt that Romney or Huck were more aligned with their positions, but by an overwhelming percentage (upper 60%) they felt McCain was the only R with a chance of winning and that's why they voted for him. Tracks my logic for supporting him. I don't care how moderate he may be on SOME issues, he's still a heck of a lot closer on those positions to my thinking than either Obama or Hillary. The National Journal ranked Obama as the most liberal Senator and Hillary as the 16th most liberal Senator in 07. You want either one of them to be the President?

I don't like McCain but I am more comfortable with him as POTUS then either of the Dems because it scares me terribly to think of the kind of Supreme Court and other judicial nominees either Obama or Clinton will put up. It is likely that the next president will have the opportunity to nominate at least 1 SCJ. We don't need a Ginsberg liberal to fill that seat.
