Of course he's saying that: he has to try and appeal to the right wingers to win the primary. But you and I both know that McCain has not in the past tried to hide the fact that he has no problems supporting moderate positions and hasn't minded being called a moderate Republican. Obama and Hillary have a huge advantage so in that they don't have to appeal to the moderates in their party to get the primary nomination; quite the contrary, they need to appeal to the left wingers. Once the general campaign begins, you are going to see the Dem nomination in the uncomfortable position of trying to appeal to the moderate Democrats and independents. I only hope the left wingers on here give their nomination as much guff as the right wingers are giving McCain.

 

McCain by the way got an "A" rating from the National Taxpayers Union and received the Taxpayers Friend Award ( just so those of you that hear so much about him voting twice against Bush's tax cuts get the full picture about where McCain stands on keeping taxes low). I've made the point on here several times that McCain is the only R that has a chance of winning the WH. Listening to NPR this morning (good to know what the other side is thinking:D) I was not surprised that in a lot of states, a majority of R voters felt that Romney or Huck were more aligned with their positions, but by an overwhelming percentage (upper 60%) they felt McCain was the only R with a chance of winning and that's why they voted for him. Tracks my logic for supporting him. I don't care how moderate he may be on SOME issues, he's still a heck of a lot closer on those positions to my thinking than either Obama or Hillary. The National Journal ranked Obama as the most liberal Senator and Hillary as the 16th most liberal Senator in 07. You want either one of them to be the President?

My objections to McCain relate to my perception that he is untrustworth and his behavior during this campaign has done nothing to persuade me otherwise. I believe that McCain would do more damage to conservatism and (less importantly) to the Republican Party than either Hillary or Obama.

 

Once elected, there is no reason for McCain to even pretend to be a conservative and the deals that he might strike with Kennedy, Pelosi, and other liberal Democrats scares me more than the alternatives. McCain's quick temper and his dim-wittedness (he graduated from the Naval Academy ranked 894th out of his class of 899) are further reasons for concern.

I really don't know how this is the barometer for "dim-wittedness." The last time I checked the Naval Academy wasn't exactly an online university. I would also consider GPA to be more of a matter of diligence rather than intelligence.

She said that she is the candidate that knows how to stand up to the Republicans and their dirty tricks and won't let her campaign be Swift boated.

I would not vote for somebody ranked 894th out of 899 for class president, let alone US President. Although I am not a strong Bush supporter, I have defended him many times against the unfair attacks by Kerry and others regarding his academic record and alleged intellectual shortcomings.

 

McCain's academic record and his age make his intelligence and the quality of his decisions fair game. In a close campaign, Democrats and their allies in the media will not hesitate to raise these questions - but I do not need anybody to tell me that McCain is a loose cannon who should not be elected to the most powerful position on the planet.

Not much chance of man who graduates in the bottom 1% of his class of being accepted into a medical school - let alone of becoming a doctor.

That is not relevant to the topic and also none of your business. Besides, I am not seeking the presidency.

 

The service academies are excellent schools, but their academic admission standards do not begin to compare to the top universities in this country. My son attended the Naval Academy's summer program in Annapolis a few years ago and was offered admission. (He declined.)

 

Admission to an Ivy League school, Duke, MIT, etc. requires better academic credentials than admission to the Naval Academy. Of course, the Navy also has some tough physical standards.
