February 5, 200818 yr Both the Bears and 49ERs were great teams but neither accomplished what the Dolphins did, end of that debate What about some of those great Bear teams from before any of our time. Back in the 30's and 40's, anybody know anything about those? The game and talent level changes... There is need for debate...
February 5, 200818 yr The game and talent level changes... There is need for debate... :thumb: You can always debate it. My vote goes to the '85 Bears. As far as teams that I have seen, '93 Cowboys probably have my vote.
February 5, 200818 yr :thumb: You can always debate it. My vote goes to the '85 Bears. As far as teams that I have seen, '93 Cowboys probably have my vote. I'd probably agree...the Bears team was the most dominating and to me, that means the best. Going undefeated is a great and unique accomplishment, but it doesn't preclude "greatest ever" from my personal opinion. To be honest, had the Patriots closed the deal,I still don't think I'd have rated them above the Bears...the way they were playing early in the season, yes. But, at the end, they just weren't beating people the way a greatest team ever should be beating people. Just my opinion...
February 5, 200818 yr Most experts say it is the 78 Steelers are the best team of all time. I would have to agree with them... Do all those experts root for the Steelers?
February 5, 200818 yr The best team ever is the 72 Dolphins period. There is not even a need for debate. They went undefeated and won the Super Bowl and along the way they lead the NFL in offense and in points allowed on defense. No one else in the 82 year history of the NFL can boast that kind of domination over their opponets. Besides Mercury says so. I say now tell who is 2nd, I think I would pick the Bears with the Frig & Sweetness. 100% False...Bears, 49ers, Cowboys, Steelers, and probably even the Colts, were all better...Period
February 5, 200818 yr You would pick some of those also rans as better than this year's Pats? No, I didn't mention NE because they were so fresh and obviously on the list. As to whether they are also-rans, that San Fran team appeared very much a legitimate 3 peat contender. Minnesota held the points record I think until this year and had Cunningham at QB, Moss at WR with Anthony Carter and Robert Smith at RB.
February 5, 200818 yr I think the debate has to be factored in on what they did in the regular and post season vs. their competition. You also have to factor in the Hall of Fame players involved to get a good gauge on greatness from different eras. Who had the most Hall people on some of these teams? Miami Csonka, Griese, Warfield, Little, Langer, Bounicotti. Steelers Bradshaw, Harris, Swann, Stallworth, Webster, Lambert, Ham, Greene, Blount San Fran Montana, Rice, Lott, Fred Dean Dallas Aikman, Irvin, Emmit Smith New England All speculation right now but you could say: Brady, Moss, who else? Chicago Dan Hampton, Mike Singletary, Walter Payton
February 5, 200818 yr Author 100% False...Bears, 49ers, Cowboys, Steelers, and probably even the Colts, were all better...Period Facts don't lie period! 72 Dolphins were undefeated, Was anyone else? NO! 72 Dolphins dominated their opponents on both sides of the ball. Proof of this is by leading the league in points scored and allowing the fewest points scored in the NFL. Can any of these other teams make such a claim? I do not know but I would be willing to wager that no one else can make that claim. This same Dolphins team made it to 3 Super Bowls in a row and had it not been for the emergence of the new football league that saw many of the 72 Dolphin stars leave the NFL for big pay days in the other league they might have made it to more. The facts support the 72 Dolphins as the best. Now that is against their peers, today the game is much different, I realize this. The game has evolved from a run first league to a well balanced league. The players are bigger, faster, stronger and better trained today than they have been at any other time in history. The only legit comparision is how teams did against the other teams of their day and no one but the Dolphins beat all takers.

Back in the 30's and 40's, anybody know anything about those? Don't have to accomplish the same to be considered better, debate on.

February 5, 200818 yr 72 Dolphins are the most achomplished, while this years Patriots are arguablythe second most achomplished. Doesn't mean either is the best overall team. I would say that you could group the 85 Bears, Steelers of the 70's 49ers of 80's, Cowboys, and perhaps this years Pat's into a group, and have a legit argument about them being the best team. Just add to the fact that athletes are better today, and the game has changed so much makes this debate difficult, but I would give more weight to more current teams if you tried to match the teams hypothetically up against each other..

Sorry, can't agree with the Patriots being the 2nd most accomplished. I believe the 84 49ers and the 85 Bears both went 18-1 also, but they WON the Superbowl. That makes them more accomplished, and IMO every all 42 teams that have won the Superbowl are more accomplished than this years Patriots.

February 5, 200818 yr Author I would give more weight to more current teams if you tried to match the teams hypothetically up against each other.. Without doubt I agree with you on that, but when I speak of the greatest teams of all time I am speaking of how they faired in their time against their peers. That is my belief in how you measure this agrument. Today's lines alone are like dinosaurs in size and strength compared to teams even in the 80's. We as fans tend to judge only on what we have seen in our time. I wonder how dominate some of the old timer teams were.
