Agreement reached on stimulus package.

I view this as some sort of last minute effort to bail out the stock market. It may work temporarily, but it's not going to curb a recession. I'll take the cash, but this solution will prove fleeting.

Anyone have any figures on the 6 months before the last Bush tax rebate check and 6 months after people got them.

I know I used mine to pay off a credit card balance, so I really didn't help the economy any with it. Except that balance was charged up in the 6 months before so I guess I sorta was helping.

I'll pay bills. Sorry if it doesn't help the economy, but I'd rather pay bills than have a shopping spree....I guess I'm a bad American.

Yeah I reckon I'll use mine to pay student loans.

Mine will go to bill payments. If I don't need it all, it goes into savings.

unless you're one of the people not paying taxes already. Translates into another welfare program for them.

Not so fast. A LOT of these people that will get money who did not put money in do have jobs, not on welfare. It's just they do not make enough for the government to take any out. The point is for them to get something as well, and spend it, thus stimulating the economy. But again, a lot of those people are not on welfare, not that all on welfare shouldn't be.

RM. I agree with you and others in thinking this will not help, for one it's too little too late, heck even the checks will take a couple of months at best to get out, the economy needs the boost now!

But, You mentioned people won't pay bills, that they will just spend it on stuff they don't need. Well, that's the whole idea, in trying to stimulate the economy you want people to go out and buy stuff, possibly a lower end big ticket item. If they spend it on bills, the vast majority would have paid those bills anyway, and will still pay them off, bills don't count on how they figure this out. Or they are hoping if they do pay some bills off that the consumer will figure "hey I paid this or that off, lets go buy something and make payments on that". That is what they are hoping for.

But again, I agree, it's too little too late, and I am not so sure that it will help out as much as they claim, or hope.

That would be an interesting stat, I am curious myself.

If you would look at the stock market the past 2 days, they think that it’s a good idea. I don’t like the idea of someone who doesn’t pay any taxes will still get a rebate.

If we assume that the $3,000 minimum earned in 2007 was wages, that person paid $459. in SS and Medicare taxes. They just didn't pay INCOME taxes.

Truedat! Ending deficit finance trips to the mall to buy more things we don't need is what should happen.

The free market economist in me says let the marketplace sort itself out. It is much more efficient than any stimulus package will be. It may cause a little pain, but what doesn't kill you usually makes you stronger.

I agree to an extent, I understand their reasoning however I don't know that it's really necessary just yet.

I'll be following this closely, as I'm sure we'll discuss it in my first class International Political Economy.

think I'll use mine to buy something I don't really need, or a vacation.

Not necessarily wages. Earned income could be business or rental income, etc. It wouldn't include portfolio income like interest, dividends, capital gains, etc.

Pay a credit card off and go on vacation to the beach, been Nascaring to much to go on a Real vacation. :dancingpa

I'll spend mine on buying some thing real purty for Henry.
