doomer Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 The Tigers looked quite impressive in their win over #5 Georgetown and are now 5-0 against teams in the top 100 RPI, including Oklahoma, Connecticut, and Southern Cal. Their strength of schedule is 30th in the nation. North Carolina, on the other hand, is 3-0 vs. teams in the top 100 rpi, including wins over BYU and Ohio State. They are currently 72nd in the nation in strength of schedule. In my opinion, Memphis should jump up to #1. If North Carolina were the previous National Champions, I could see their team holding the top position until some team knocks them down with a loss, but they really have no legitimate claim to #1 at this point in the season. What do you all think?
gametime Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 Memphis St has been my #1 since the season started...
pnthr4life Posted January 14, 2008 Posted January 14, 2008 I would have no problem with Memphis being #1. However, I think with them being in a very weak C-USA and more than likely running the table there, they will end up the overall #1 seed come March.
STRIKE3 Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 They looked solid against Marshall, in their last game.
buzzer beater Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Memphis has played 5 pretty good teams ( 3 of them were ranked ). They play in a very weak conference. They will have no problem going 16-0 in the C-USA. North Carolina has played 5 really good teams ( 1 has been ranked ). Carolina has played some very, very tough road games. They had to play a very good Davidson team, a very good Ohio State team, on the road, and a good BYU team on the road. They also beat UK at Rupp, which I know is nothing big, but still. They also beat a good Clemson team on the road, and they DRILLED a good 11-4 N.C. State team. When it's conference play, UNC has an a lot tougher conference to play in.
Pancake Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 I am a UNC fan and it would not bother me if Memphis jumped to #1. I just want to be #1 at the end of March Madness.
HT721 Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Memphis will be lucky to make it to the elite 8. CUSA will keep them ranked high for the remainder of the year, but it will also leave them unprepared. The high ranked teams they beat were early in the season. It means a lot more to beat a high ranked team in February than in November. Also when you play every good team on your schedule at home it helps a lot.

So they were REALLY lucky to make the Elite 8 the last two years without an elite PG???

They know the C-USA is weak, that's why they scheduled a strong non-conference schedule. The schedule hasn't hurt them the last few years and it's not as easy as it may seem in the sense the they are everyone's game of the year in the C-USA. I think you also might be unrating their talent--they are VERY good and athletic.

What do you all think? UNC has done nothing to lose the #1 spot. Also, when the conference season gets going and UNC's SOS catches and passes Memphis', would you then switch them back? I really don't think it matters that much since they are both looking like locks for #1 seeds in the NCAAs.

I really don't think it matters that much since they are both looking like locks for #1 seeds in the NCAAs. Nor did they do anything to earn it. They were not the reigning nat'l champs. Memphis does about all it can do to compensate for their conference shortcomings. It wasn't Memphis's fault that Cinn., Louisville, Depaul, Marquette jumped ship for a stronger conference. If Memphis had their choice they would do the same...but where? As it is looking today, maybe Kansas should be No. 1. They have been very impressive. At the end of the day, all that matters is the NCAA seeding. However, that makes a difference! The last two years, Memphis has had to go to the West region. It would be nice to be able to play closer to their home, if when the opportunity presents itself at tourney time.
NobizLikeShowbiz Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 After watching Kansas last night, Ill say they are my #1.
