Soccer at Beechwood?

Featured Replies

Yes, I absolutely said I was against soccer. Obviously that is not in doubt. I still dont think it is in the best interest of girls' sports overall for Beechwood at this time. In a few years, when the high school gets bigger, that, for me, would be a different issue. The elementary school is growing like crazy. I strongly objected to elementary parents trying to dictate what the high school does RIGHT NOW. When their girls get there the time will probably be right. I personally do not think the right time is now.

However, IF there is a LARGE group of young high school women who are truly interested in playing soccer, and who have been left out of Beechwood opportunities, I do not want to see them left out.

If we are going to do it, then we need to do it correctly. I dont want to see a new program initiated that will flounder and die and hurt the current programs we still have in the process.

That is why I support the SBDMC decision. It will be a fair and a true measure of what high school girls need and want. If it becomes a reality, we need all the participation we can get. THAT is why I would like to see a large numbers of girls to show up.

Nice. If you want a team, then you have to wait until you get into high school and then we will consider. Or we might not. That is the chance you will have to take.

If there was enough interest in the high school then why haven't those girls gone to the A.D or Principal and say, we want soccer. At the last soccer mtg, the Pro soccer group had T-shirts made w/soccer on them and the speaker had them stand. Out of the 30 or so kids there only ONE girl was in high school. The majority of the interest comes from the elementary parents, not the high school parents.

Soccer is a great thing, 11 kids can play at once but numbers is a must for a successful program and BHS will see those numbers w/their two week camp.

Here is a question/comment I hear all the time. "I can take a basketball, baseball/softball, volleyball and football player and they can play soccer, but can I take a soccer player and have them play any of the before mentioned?" Just a question. You don't see many soccer players playing another sport unless the football teams get one to do the kicking in which they are usually the best in the area.

So if there was a quality soccer player as an elementary student and that was that child's sport, went you think they still went to Beechwood, even though that sport wasn't offered.

Great logic.

You can't form a team at the high school level from groups of kids who have never played and expect success, however, you can't expect kids who are playing the sport to come to Beechwood if there is no program.

You tell me which has to come first?

I would contend that your first point is wrong, but this one borders on silly ( (I would use a stronger word :D). A football player who has never played soccer would play soccer at just about the same level a soccer player who has never played football and tried to play.

A very bad misconception.

For a young person, soccer is the VERY BEST sport for them to play. All sports is built upon footwork. And soccer does nothing but develop footwork. Soccer will develop the abilities of players for all other sports.

Footwork in football is essential. Quick feet helps and soccer helps develop that.

Footwork in tennis, wrestling, baseball is important. Soccer develops quick feet.

Not real sure what you are getting at here. BHS houses k-12, elem being k-6 w/the middle school consisting of 7/8th grades and the H.S. 9-12. This as far as I know is not any different than other schools. What I am saying and I can't get any more simple than this, girls that are in the 8th grade at BHS that decide to leave after their 8th grade yr due to not having soccer has only been TWO. One is on a soccer scholarship at Bellarmine(soph) and the other is currently a Sr at NDA.

I have trouble believing that only 2 players from Beechwood Middle School had aspirations of playing high school soccer and decided to find a school that offered them that opportunity. I'm betting that there are others that have chosen to leave but have just not made the reason for leaving public knowledge. As popular as soccer is in NKY, I just cannot see Beechwood not having dozens of girls that want to play the game in high school.

You have got to be kidding. You take a kid from any other sport, that has never played soccer or has played only rec soccer, and put that kid in a serious soccer game; that kid will fall flat on his or her face on the soccer field and look very silly doing it.

In my opinion, it would be much easier to take a soccer player and turn him into a decent receiver or defensive back than it would be to take a receiver or DB and make him into a decent soccer player.

I wasn't saying that I said what is quoted, what I meant was that I have heard people make this comment.

As for you comment about taking the football player and playing soccer and visa versa, I guarantee you take a skilled position football player and put them on a soccer field, they would not fall on their face.

Believe it! There are not others that have left to play soccer, others have left for other sports, basketball, softball and golf but only 2 for soccer (both to NDA).

I will bet that Beechwood will play a JV schedule next season!

What is the update on this one? Did the camp begin this week? How many girls showed up and how many were actually upper class players(9-12)?

So, where are all the BHS soccer backers?? How is the camp going? Was there enough interest to even do the camp???

Someone, anyone???

OK, hot off the press from Beechwood. There was another mtg held tonight and soccer is voted IN! It will now go to the board on Mon for final approval which I can tell you, for a fact, it will get IN! Remember I told you so.

Now, my question is why were there stipulations made re: this 2 week camp about there must be at least 16 players consistantly at this camp for consideration. From my sources they had only 14 players max at this camp and it was still voted IN because it was said "that's close enough!" Secondly, the parents have agreed to come up w/the money needed to fund this team. So, my second question is how can this be? I was under the impression when a donation is made it basically can not be steered into one pot but all the pots. So, I could not designate a $10,000 donation to the volleyball team w/out doing the same for all other sports.

As for everyone saying getting soccer would not affect volleyball, fact, last yr there were enough 7/8th grade girls to actually have individual teams for both. This yr, as of right now, there were only 4 7th graders at open gym, not sure about the 8th graders. I think this is affecting volleyball!
