It won't happen, but what about Jerry Perry, longtime assistant at Danville and one-time head coach at Garrard County (65-18 record; playoffs every season at a school that had been ONCE TOTAL in 27 years).

 

I just can't see Coach Perry going across town like that. Whoever Boyle decides on will no doubt be a premier coach.

Is anyone like me and wish this was all a bad dream? I keep thinking what if Coach Smith had never left. What would Boyle Co. Football be like? While I am happy for Coach Smith, I sure do miss him and his family and all he had to offer Boyle County! I bet he misses us to.

I believe he's from Springfield, Washington County, which is only 30 minutes +/- from Danville.

Personally, I don't think Dudley Hilton would be a good fit for Boyle, IMO. He may be a good coach who has been successful, but not all coaches' personality/character, etc. will 'fit' the Boyle Co. program. Coaches like French or Buchanan have the character and work ethics more suitable for Boyle Co. Folks like to compare potential candidates to the great Chuck Smith and I just don't see Dudley Hilton fitting that mold, but that is not to take away the fact that Hilton is a good football coach.

 

Anybody heard when they're going to post this position? I'd think they would want to hire someone fairly quickly and move on with it.

I Personally think the hiring process needs to be done from outside and not with the present coaching staff.

The only thing that's going to take Boyle back to where they were is a run of players like they had with Smith. Face it, that place caught lightning in a bottle with a great leader and a great support staff that knew how to harnes what they had. Pardue didn't let the program slip, the talent just isn't there right now. I will say this, Boyle Co. isn't the great job everyone makes it out to be. The bar got set to high and it's going to take a few more years before people realize that ONE state title apperance every TEN years is good. Not to mention, the East half of 4A is brutal, and there's a little fella named Lexington Catholic that's always going to be waiting for you in the 2nd round if they keep this kooky playoff format.

Hester was 14-28 at Garrard County with one playoff appearance in four years. Garrard had been to the playoffs seven consecutive seasons prior to Hester becoming head coach (Hester was the defensive coordinator on those teams), twice losing in the third round. He was a bit hamstrung by moving up from Class A to AA during his term.

 

One problem of Hester's at Garrard was that the offense always seemed overmatched and the play-calling was very mediocre.

 

1997: 2-8, 15 ppg.

1998: 3-7, 13 ppg.

1999: 7-5, 30 ppg.

2000: 2-8, 17 ppg.

 

Jeff Hester is a great guy and a good defensive coach, but he's probably not who Boyle County wants or needs as their head man.

 

 

 

I understand Coach Hester's record and history at GCHS, but I honestly wouldn't be bothered at all about Boyle County hiring Coach Hester. His son will be a freshman next year and the entire freshman class knows him very well as he never misses his son's athletic events. I have mentioned before that a lot of the talent everyone says Boyle County was missing was actually walking the halls and not suiting up because honestly a lot of the kids did not like Coach Pardue and while I don't have details as to why they didn't like Coach Pardue, I just know the talent wasn't playing for Coach Pardue. I also know that those kids don't just like Coach Hester, they love Coach Hester and I could envision each one of those kids who sat out or quit last year coming back to play simply because of Coach Hester being the head coach. The talent Coach Smith had didn't go anywhere, it just didn't want to play for Pardue. I don't think Boyle County could go wrong with hiring Coach Hester, plus my son said he'd play football if Coach Hester was named head coach, so I might be a little biased, but I do honestly think Coach Hester would be great fit.

 

Regardless of who the next coach is, I do hope they keep the current assistants if one of the assistants is not named head coach. They deserve that much.

The talent is at Boyle County, it just isn't on the field. The next coach needs to be able to get that talent on the field. That's the real problem at Boyle County, not the East side of the 4A bracket. We've beaten Catholic before, we can beat Catholic again.

I agree 100% with this assessment. Boyle had an incredible run of talent with an incredible head coach. I hate to say this because my son, who plays football, will be a freshman at Boyle County HS next year; but I'm telling you guys the talent pond has dryed up in the county school. I have watched the middle school games over the past 3 years, and there just isn't much coming up through the ranks to get excited about. I hope I don't offend anyone reading this, but it's just my honest opinion. Things don't look a whole lot better across town at Danville either for the near future. As a matter of fact, I may have to put in for a BGP name change with management.:cry:

I have to respectfully disagree. I think the middle school team had kids playing out of position and not being properly used or coached. That may change in high school, it may not. I think the talent is there. Can it be utilized is the question. Size may hurt us more than anything else, but the ability and talent is definitely there.

I saw that 8th grade team play several times and those were good wins but middle school success doesn't guarantee anything at the next level. Perhaps that class will be the foundation that will return BCHS football to prominence. Only time will tell.
