I was at the Boyle/Lincoln basketball game Friday night.

 

I heard that Boyle contacted Guy Morriss.

 

Seriously.

 

Apparently, he told them that he would love to coach high school ball again but that he is going to Arkansas.

 

Actually I heard the same thing while I was in over Christmas but didn't want to put it out there because I thought it was one of those crazy stories people wouldn't believe.

I understand Coach Hester's record and history at GCHS, but I honestly wouldn't be bothered at all about Boyle County hiring Coach Hester. His son will be a freshman next year and the entire freshman class knows him very well as he never misses his son's athletic events. I have mentioned before that a lot of the talent everyone says Boyle County was missing was actually walking the halls and not suiting up because honestly a lot of the kids did not like Coach Pardue and while I don't have details as to why they didn't like Coach Pardue, I just know the talent wasn't playing for Coach Pardue. I also know that those kids don't just like Coach Hester, they love Coach Hester and I could envision each one of those kids who sat out or quit last year coming back to play simply because of Coach Hester being the head coach. The talent Coach Smith had didn't go anywhere, it just didn't want to play for Pardue. I don't think Boyle County could go wrong with hiring Coach Hester, plus my son said he'd play football if Coach Hester was named head coach, so I might be a little biased, but I do honestly think Coach Hester would be great fit.

 

Regardless of who the next coach is, I do hope they keep the current assistants if one of the assistants is not named head coach. They deserve that much.

 

 

I think part of the problems have lied with some assistants that have been there since the Chuck Smith days. I don't include Hester with that group but some have been a source of problem as well.

 

I don't know that Boyle will get a "big name" coach because the "bloom is off the rose" so to speak. Smith did catch "lightning in a bottle" that is darn near unprecedented in KHSAA football. However Boyle had "good" teams before the Smith era they never achieved the level of success Smith did (who has?). There is enough talent and facilities to make Boyle better than they have been the last 2 years but it will take a special coach to right the ship (sorry for the Ads illustration).

Coach Smith was a diamond in the rough coach that found

the perfect fit and did not make any excuses at any program

that he was with prior to Boyle. He knew how and why you

developed players in the off season. Anyone that knew the

of the great talent at Boyle would have developed and won

with them before. He built a great program, staff and players

played as one. I would say that they had minimal talent as

compared to the schools that recruit like X,T, and Catholic.

I think the comment about the assistants is unwarranted. I have been around the Boyle County Football program for a long time and I can tell you that those assistants have a great knowledge of the game and are very good instructors. I don't know to whom you are referring, but each coach is a great guy and they work very well together. Mason and Hester could easily be head coaches elsewhere and are capable of running the Boyle program. Coach Smith and Coach Pardue are special individuals and each are great football minds, but the "bloom is not off the rose" as there is enough talent in the school to field a team capable of challenging for a title. Whoever becomes the next coach has big shoes to fill, but he has enough in place to come in and win (good assistants, good talent base to build around, good support from the quarterback club and good facilities - better if we get turf). Don't knock things because of a couple of non-championship years.
