Vipperman, to Belfry fans, is hallowed ground. It is our Memorial Coliseum. While not the actual birthplace of Belfry football, it is the home to our emergence and the foundation for the program that we are today. It is a special place for us and it represents years of labor and strife by all who set foot on it. It definitely lacked in conveniences, but it made up for that in character and tradition.

 

And it will always be beloved and significant in the hearts of all Belfry Pirates who knew it during it's glory days.

 

 

Very well said. Vipperman was very special place to play. The overall lack of conveniences added to the mystique. Alot of blood, sweat and tears have been spilled on that old turf....and she'll always be held in the highest regard to the Belfry faithful. From the poor lighting...to the fans climbing the mountain backdrop for many a game....Vipperman had a magical feel to it. A feeling that CAM has yet to discover. That could very well change come Friday afternoon if the boys can win one more. If that happens, then we can say a championship marched thru CAM. No one should ever devalue the role or significance of Vipperman stadium to the Belfry faithful. It's definitely hallowed ground.

I always kinda liked Vipperman. I always thought the old concrete bleachers were cool...literally, and figuratively.

 

The lighting at the new stadium is fantastic...I loved it. If Breathitt County could only have one between the lighting and the turf field, I'd take the lighting. But, both would be nice.

 

I don't know if BC will ever try to get a turf field or not...the grass they have now has been pretty good. The drawback is that it requires a lot of work from what I hear...turf may be more expensive at the onset (I don't know), but I'm sure the maintainence costs are minimal.

Belfry was really overdue for a new complex. I agree that Vipperman was a place with a ton of character but when you consider what Belfry football, baseball and softball players had to do just to practice is crazy. Get on a bus EVERY day and go to Hardy Park.

 

Speaking of Hardy Park it had it's own character and nuances but in all honesty never should have been a high school baseball field. Right field was only 200' from homeplate is crazy.

 

Belfry definately has something to be proud of and deserve.

Very poor design and maintenance problems led to the building being condemned. It hadn't been used since at least '05.

 

The gym is in almost the same condition. There must have been something in the water of the engineers who designed those two buildings. Who would design a roof with 45 degree angles on it, and no direct runoff??

From a visiting team standpoint, that old, decaying Vipperman stadium was nothing short of intimidating. You felt like the Pirate Nation was right on top of you as you stood on the sideline. Vipperman definitely served as Belfry's "12th man" for every game. I felt much more comfortable last year at the CAM and the final score refelcted same.

Thanks Ipapi - the newer building really did not fit into the overall setting of the old Belfry campus. You could tell it was designed during the psychadelic period.

 

I haven't been in the gym in over 10 years. I didn't realize it had got in that bad of shape. It was always dark in there I thought.
