Who is to blame in the Les Miles fiasco?

Curious.

I know a few of you feel you have good sources on the situation.

I know a few people who have some contacts at UM, but certainly not moles.

Now from what I have been told is essentially behind the scenes is that UM and Miles through intermediaries had hammered out a deal that was palatable for both sides.

Essentially, Miles made it clear that he wanted to focus on the SEC Title game, then move forward from there, but wanted the focus on the game.

The agreement so to speak, was agreed to on Thursday or Friday, but the formal interview still had to take place. Have to do the interview.

I believe that UM's AD got fleeced in the Beilein deal from WVU...he hammered out deal and was too far down the road and was drubbed in the buyout of his conract from WVU.

Someone somewhere leaked the info Friday. Then Herbstreit ran with it as did some others.

At this point on Friday when this was going down, Miles became upset that all of this had happened against his wishes in all fairness to LSU.

The administration from LSU then stepped to the plate with a very lucrative deal and said we want you, why don't you just stay.

Miles decides that is what he wants to do...this leads into the impromptu presser on Saturday in Atlanta and then sends many in backpedaling.

Who leaked it? Why would they?

I will contend and still do that Kentucky and Billy Donovan had long been communicating on a deal to head to UK, some will not agree and that is fine. UK knew there was trouble when all communication was stopped cold right after UF won the regional. Something happened on the Donovan side..family or something and it is very apparant considering what happened with the Magic...maybe just a change of heart.

There is a faction at UM that didn't want Miles, ala Carr. I believe that is one reason why Carr announced his retirement so quickly...fairly obvious though. Some have said that the prez favored Ferentz and Martin wanted Miles.

I don't think that Miles had told his players his intention. He may have but I doubt that is something you would want to do heading into a game with the magnitude of the SEC Title...and lingering BCS title hopes.

So obviously, the info got leaked but who did it?

Side note...I heard that Brian Kelly was never a serious contender for the job. His personality would not have been a good fit for he stuffed-shirt crowd. In addition, I guess he had some characters on his team when he was at GVS.

Carr never came out publicly and endorsed Miles. There are some who felt Carr announced early to burden Miles some. One of the stories making the rounds has to do with Carr's Parkinson's Disease. He's fine when on medication but some felt that Miles was using that against Carr and Michigan on the recruiting trail and Carr found out.

If you're Carr and you want Miles to be your replacement, you wait until after the bowl season or at least after the SEC title game to announce your retirement so to take the heat off Miles. When he announced early, he was sending a message that he wasn't backing Miles for the job.

Does he have that? Sorry to hear that.

I had heard there is a certian faction at UM that is not high on Miles because they thought he was a real "brown-noser" with Bo.

Take that for whatever that means.

I'd say a lot didn't want Miles because..... he is Miles! I could definatly see how he can rub people the wrong way. I love his passion but at times I just flat out can't stand him. He seems way to into himself for my liking.

Bill Martin appears to have conducted himself honorably and by the book --- that is, he promised he wouldn't speak with Miles or his agent until after the SEC championship game and that's exactly what he did.

Maybe somebody in the Michigan athletic department, maybe somebody on the search committee, maybe some well-heeled booster ... maybe one of them blabbed spoke too soon. "Yeah, that's our guy and we're gonna get him. No chance he stays at LSU." (And hey, look! UM grad Desmond Howard --- who works with Herbstreit at ESPN on fall weekends --- just happened to be a member of the search committee.)

Put yourself in Les Miles' position. All of a sudden you're a lock to quit your job --- in fact, "you already told your players you're leaving," according to the grapevine --- and take a new job, but the problem with that is that you haven't talked to anybody about the new job and nobody who works for you has talked about it, either.

So yeah, you're a little upset.

Michigan is just not very good at conducting high-profile coaching searches.

Blame whoever you want, but I think somebody on the search committee is to blame.

I think the blame goes to all these people going around and saying, "its a done deal" and "mark it down." Perception became reality briefly for the public in this situation.
Did you read what he wrote at all?

It was a done deal.

Miles can come out in a press conference and say what he wants. I don't think we have heard the last of him as the Mich. coach. He said what he needed to say and kept his players positive to play in a Championship game.

When the final game is played we'll see if he actually stays at LSU or leads the Wolverines.

I think Miles put up a great smokescreen.

It's not just Michigan, that much I am sure of.

I honestly feel that if Les Miles wins a National Championship, and he still hasn't signed that extension, Michigan will have an 11th hour "godfather" deal. I just want it all to be over with personally........

And I have no doubts that Desmond is the one that leaked the info.

I am still in the ring of thought that he will be the Michigan coach. He still has to win the national title first though, so it was time to silence the rumors until after the bowl game. Herbstreet would not have reported that it was a done deal if he didn't have a good source. I wouldn't be shocked at all if he is in Ann Arbor next season.
