December 3, 200718 yr I remember cutting branches off of the willow trees down by the creek and using them to make homemade "bows and arrows". This was a favorite of mine.
December 4, 200718 yr No excuses, technology doesn't make people overweight, people make people overweight. Great stuff oldrambler, and to think we all survived. Not true, technology and the convenience of it directly attributes towards making lazy people continue to be lazy and over weight. It's a negative reinforcement. I myself fall into the category of motivated person who likes video games, but unfortunately many of todays youth don't. Seems more kids are passing up school sports for home video games instead. In my mind that falls on the parents shoulders as well though.
December 4, 200718 yr Born in the 50's , so yes I grew up with all of this..remember making snow cream...I can't imagine eating it now... Boy,do I remember that, eating that snow cream was the highlight of our day.:thumb:
December 4, 200718 yr Grew up just slightly out of the time frame. Have four sisters. I learned very quick that if I wanted to stay out of trouble that I should stay outside. Noone would tell on me out there. Would go to the store, get a snickers bar paid with pennies and nickels then go out in the woods or the creek to see what the crawdaddies were doing. Ohh and we never had cable tv until I was in high school. We got it solely because we were missing out on so much sports (ESPN mainly).

Seriously, I can not blame people being obese on a computer, some have congenital problems or heredity issues, but not moving off the couch is not any inanimate object's fault. People smoking is not the cigarettes fault, I doubt that you could find anyone in this country that would say smoking is good for you. High cholesterol is not McDonald's fault, I doubt you could find anyone who says that a Big Mac is good for you. Likewise, I doubt that you could find anyone, including obese people who say that living a sedentary life style is good for you, or who say that not exercising is better then exercising. It comes down to laziness and self-motivation. No matter what you blame it on, it comes down to the person. Is that person going to do something about their health, or not?

As a fat guy I should respond to this post, but I don't feel like it.
December 4, 200718 yr Well, I for one enjoyed the stroll down memory lane. My baby brothers "car seat" was a canvas chair with two metal loops that hung over the back of the seat of the car. A parent would get ticketed today for putting a child in a seat like that.
December 4, 200718 yr As a fat guy I should respond to this post, but I don't feel like it. You not fat, your pleasantly plump. And there are not many of us that could not stand to loose a few pounds.

And seat belts, I don't remember putting a seat belt on until I took drivers ed in high school and the instructor told me to. I had never really thought about it until then. As far as I remember, I never had a car seat.
December 4, 200718 yr The irony is the generation lavished with praise for how they grew up is raising the generation they are criticizing for growing up the wrong way.

December 4, 200718 yr Born in the 50's , so yes I grew up with all of this..remember making snow cream...I can't imagine eating it now... Getting on our bikes and riding down to the bakery to buy "ice balls" that were sold out of a side window in the bakery. Riding down to the Tressler/Comet station to get a Coke and stand there and watch the guy work on cars because we were not allowed to take off with the bottles which had to go back to the empties rack beside the old pull-out coke machine. Speaking of bikes, did you ever go to the junkyard to pick up parts and make yourself a bicycle for a fraction of the cost of a new one? Anyone remember jitneys? Or a neighborhood game called "runners"? When I heard the 6:00pm church bells I knew I had to head home for supper, and when the street lights came on I knew it was time to head home for the night.

I never said it's anyones fault, I said technology does unfortunately directly contribute to the problem, that and push over parents that won't make their kids do anything they don't want to. I've seen it many times in my life and some people grow out of it eventually, but unfortunately alot of the people gain weight in their teen years that they're never able to shed and that only adds to the problem later on down the road.

I thought your were implying that the people were unable to exercise because of technology. Good point.
