December 6, 200718 yr Author In the summer months I ride through different communities and see the empty parks and ball fields, that were always being used during my youth. I can remember playing home run derby all day long at Lemker field, or strikeout at the football stadium. Those were the days!!!! :thumb: Absolutely...Of course it wasn't Lemker field for us but the same was true here as well I remember my grandma making me got get a switch off the tree so she could whoop my behind with it. Talk about picking your own poison!! Been there and done that.:eek: Things I hardly ever see kids doing outside anymore that I used to do: Run through the sprinklers Stickball with a broom stick and a taped-up whiffle ball Hopscotch on a chalked up sidewalk Jump rope Hula hoops Setting up an outdoor war using plastic army men, et. al. Lemonade stands Tree-houses Homemade tents, using folding chairs, blankets, et. al. Burning ants and leaves, etc. with a magnifying glass Bike jumps using lumber from a nearby building site Launching water balloons from homemade slingshots Tetherball Handball ("buns up") using a medium cherry ball Marbles Slip-n-slide Sleepovers "Can John come out and play" I'm sure kids still do some of these things but they are not, say, as frequent. Once again, great post hearsay - I remember all of those, I was a terror at marbles. A intense competitior had to have the "steelies/marbles", my dad was a machinist at a steel mill so I had an ample supply of the steel ball bearings to use to knock others out of the ring.... In the neighborhood I grew up in, if you were bad, a mom or dad yelled at you. Didn't matter if it wasn't your mom or dad, you got punished. :thumb:

December 9, 200718 yr Kick the can at night was my favorite game...I tried to teach my daughter and I think she thought I was nuts! I remember swinging for hours and going from house to house and drinking from the hoses.! It was great. I used to love kick the can. And, like you, my kids look at me like Im the town clown when I talk about it. We used to have 20-30 kids playing. We also used to camp out in the mountains when we were only 12 or so and "spotlight" was the big game. We were in Eastern Ky and we took mining lights. Its the same premise as kick the can except with a spotlight. I love this thread.....Im back in my childhood days for a few minutes. I hadnt thought about "kick the can" in a long time!!

December 9, 200718 yr I to have given this some great deal of thought. I believe the things that have made us change are as follows: Increase of Population, Its seems to me there is twice as many people around than when I was growing up in the 70's (born 1964) Increase of Automobiles, more people more cars. Increase of Law Suits, This non-sense has changed our whole reasons of doing things and what we allow done. Ex: years ago you would allow kids to come over and play at your house, yard, in pool. Now your afraid if something happens your getting a call from a lawyer. If the kid was to lie about something "GOD For-BID" you'll have to move away. Non Punishment of Crimes, this to me is the NUMBER 1 reason things are different now. When I was growing up you were afraid to do something wrong, fear of GOD first, fear of your parents second, fear of the law third, and fear of what people would thing of you if did do something bad. Not to mention how your family would feel and the embarssment you would bring to them. All these reason are why, not video games, TV, and Mcdonalds. JMHO. Just a quick note on this....I remember the first video game. I was facinated by "Pong"(many of you old timers know what Im talking about). As far as TV, there was 3 channels that went off the air at around nidnight. As for McDonald's, I think someone was in the hospital the first time I ever got Micky D's....I dont remember exactly, but it was a thrill!!!!

December 9, 200718 yr Whatever happened to kids going to the playground to play hoops? Pickup basketball is a lost art. Nothing better then when I was 14 and would go to the park and play hoops against 19-28 yr old guys with beer breath. They would hack the crap out of you and then in between baskets go take a big swig out of their 40 ouncer. Toughens you up and playing ball like this all day long can reduce the obesity factor.
December 9, 200718 yr Author I was born in 1961 and I made the exact comment to my wife recently. I have no explanation. For some reason we can't imagine giving our children the freedom to do the things we did. Has society made us over-protective? I don't know if society has made us over protective or not. If that "society" means that there are so many "hoods", "thugs" and kids having no morals and/or no fear or respect of any authority then I guess that it has made us over protective. I was born in 57' and was 75' H.S. Grad, don't get me wrong. We were by no means running around with 'halos" over our heads and we got into our share of trouble but there was a line that a person did not cross and we knew it. We had respect for authority - our Parents, Teachers, Police and other persons of authority. Don't get me wrong, there are still some great kids out there. There is just way too many of these no respect little thugs and criminals that grow into big thugs and crminals that produce more little thugs and criminals! This country is becoming more and more Moraly Bankrupt! As I said earlier, there a a lot of very good kids out there and I do not mean to lump all in one category. JMO

You said Bob Seagar, I certainly remember him , when I was in H.S. it was "Alice Cooper", "the Doobie Bros.", "Three Dog Night", "Bees Gees" ( yes, disco was one of the bad things that came out of that era-:lol:) I am sure that I am forgetting some but two that were of my era that are still going today were imo the best of all time.....the "Eagles" and "Lynyrd Skynyrd"
